About Amitava
I write and edit books. I am also an artist, cartoonist and documentary film-maker. I have taught underprivileged children for some time as well as adults who for various reasons missed an opportunity to learn English 'properly'. I was part of the team that in 1999 started designing a new kind of textbooks for primary students in West Bengal - it was a WB Government project being funded by the DFID. I am passionate about literature and arts, kids are naturally drawn to me, and I cook to relax. I have a cat.

Techniques largely depend on individual students. For school students, making them stay attentive is a challenge, and therefore I use a lot of visual elements and make learning an experience which is basically fun. This is especially useful while teaching grammar. College students and adults like my approach of using film scripts a lot - an interaction between Cary Grant and Ingrid Bergman is always more exciting than a dreary everyday text. But some students like to stick to the straight and the narrow, and for them I am always more conservative. I do assign 'home-works', but that is never a lengthy piece of drudgery, but more like listening to audio books which are easily accessible these days. I have taught Visual Anthropology to Bangladeshi students at the Asian Institute of Photography, and I know how to handle first generation learners without being condescending.
