About Harold
My approach to saxophone teaching centers on nurturing a strong technical foundation while cultivating each student’s personal musical voice and creativity. I emphasize essentials like breath support, embouchure control, finger technique, posture, tone production, articulation, and intonation, as these underpin all successful saxophone playing. Recognizing that every student learns differently, I adapt lessons to fit their individual goals, interests, and learning preferences. Improvisation is a fundamental part of the curriculum, introduced early and expanded through exercises that build familiarity with scales, modes, and chord changes, as well as ear training that sharpens musical intuition. Theory is integrated seamlessly, connected to practical playing and improvisation to reinforce understanding. Repertoire spans jazz, blues, pop, and classical genres, selected collaboratively to keep lessons engaging and personally meaningful. I help students set clear, realistic goals and develop practice strategies that fit their lives, ensuring consistent growth without overwhelm. Technology is an important tool in my teaching, using recordings, metronomes, tuners, and backing tracks to improve practice effectiveness and foster self-awareness. One of my proudest teaching experiences was watching a student gain confidence and perform an original improvisation at a community concert. I aim to develop saxophonists who are technically proficient, creatively inspired, and passionate about sharing their music.

As a saxophone educator, I believe that effective teaching combines rigorous technical training with the freedom to explore and express. I guide students through essential skills such as breath management, embouchure formation, articulation clarity, finger agility, and tone development to establish a solid, sustainable playing foundation.
Early in lessons, I introduce music theory, ear training, and jazz harmony to equip students with the tools to understand and create music independently. Lessons are tailored to individual goals and musical preferences, whether that includes deep study of bebop solos, soulful ballads, or improvising over hip-hop and funk rhythms. Improvisation is at the core of my teaching approach; I break it into components such as scale practice, melodic phrasing, rhythmic complexity, and expressive dynamics to build creativity and confidence.
I employ engaging strategies like call-and-response, improvisational games, and jam tracks to develop students’ ear and spontaneity. Technology enhances the learning experience through recording software, slow-down apps, and digital loopers, which allow students to self-assess and experiment creatively.
I also emphasize performance readiness, coaching stage presence, emotional communication, and anxiety management. One of my proudest moments was helping a student transition from reading exclusively from sheet music to confidently improvising and leading an ensemble. My mission is to create a nurturing and stimulating environment where students feel empowered to find their unique voice on the saxophone.
