About Matthew

Hello! My name is Matthew, and I am passionate about helping students build confidence and succeed in social studies, history, government, and civics. My academic background includes studying law at Mitchell-Hamline School of Law, a political science degree from Luther College, earning a perfect score on the AP United States Government and Politics Exam, and earning a passing score on the APUSH exam. In addition to my academic experience, I have real-world experience working in politics with the Minnesota Senate, and as a long-term substitute teacher, giving me valuable classroom experience working with students from diverse educational backgrounds, learning styles, and support needs.

As someone who is neurodiverse myself, I understand that every student learns differently and that traditional teaching methods do not work for everyone. I have experience working with neurodiverse students and believe strongly in creating a supportive, flexible, and encouraging learning environment where students feel comfortable asking questions and learning at their own pace. I tailor lessons to each student's strengths, whether that means breaking concepts into smaller steps, using discussion-based learning, or incorporating visual aids, or helping students develop organization and study strategies that work for them.

My tutoring style emphasizes critical thinking, clear communication, and real-world connections that make history and government feel relevant and approachable. Whether a student needs help preparing for an AP exam, improving classroom performance, developing writing and analytical skills, or simply gaining confidence in social studies, I strive to make lessons engaging, personalized, and productive.

Professionalism, patience, adaptability, and empathy are central to my teaching approach, and I am committed to helping each student feel capable, supported, and successful in their academic journey.

As a law student, substitute teacher, and a recipient of a perfect score on the AP United States Government and Politics Exam, and a passing score on the APUSH Exam, I bring both academic and real classroom experience to every lesson.

My teaching style focuses on discussion, critical thinking, and making complex historical and political concepts easy to understand through real world examples and interactive learning.

A typical lesson includes reviewing key concepts, practicing analytical skills, working through primary and secondary sources as well as essay questions, all to build strong study habits tailored to each student's needs.

What sets me apart is my ability to connect history, government, and civics to current events and legal reasoning, helping students truly understand the material rather than simply memorize facts.

My lessons are designed for middle school, high school, AP-level students, and introductory college students seeking support in U.S. history, government, civics, political science, and related social studies courses, including Minnesota Studies.
