About Alana
I am 17 years old at Leigh High School, where I am an active member of the National Honor Society and spent more than 200 hours tutoring other students, in all subjects. Most of my volunteer tutoring was done one-on-one and in small groups through NHS, where I worked with high school students on a regular basis. I primarily tutored math, including Integrated Math 1, Integrated Math 2, and introductory Precalculus or AP Calc AB concepts, but I also helped students revise essays for English and history classes. In those sessions, I focused on helping students understand the reasoning behind each step instead of simply giving them answers. For essay revision, I worked with students on organization, thesis development, clarity, grammar, and strengthening their arguments while making sure the final work remained their own. I hope to go to UCLA starting in Fall of 2027.

In addition to my volunteer experience, I have provided paid tutoring online to middle school and high school students. Most of these sessions have been conducted one-on-one through video calls, where I use digital whiteboards, screen sharing, and practice problems to keep lessons interactive. I begin by identifying the concepts a student is struggling with, then break them into smaller, manageable steps before gradually increasing the difficulty as their confidence grows. I encourage students to explain their thinking out loud so I can identify misconceptions and adjust my teaching to fit their learning style. I also believe that building confidence is just as important as improving grades, so I make an effort to create a supportive environment where students feel comfortable asking questions and making mistakes.
My goal as a tutor is not only to help students succeed on their next assignment or exam, but to give them the skills to solve problems independently in the future. Whether I am helping a student work through a challenging math problem or revise an essay, I want them to leave each session with a stronger understanding of the material and the confidence to tackle similar work on their own.
I charge $20/hr. First lesson is free as a way to get to know me and my abilities!
