  • When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

As a retired Mechanical Engineer, I initially developed an interest in Engineering because I liked (and was good at) Mathematics and Physics in High School. In addition, an older friend, who I respected, enrolled into Engineering and I did the same.
As far as tutoring is concerned, after retirement, I noticed that I still had retained my Mathematics and Physics capabilities. Due to my love of STEM, I decided to share my knowledge by tutoring.
  • Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).

I tutor Algebra, Trigonometry, Pre-Calculus, Calculus 1 and 2, Physics 1, and Introductory Statistics.
I like to discuss the meanings and uses of differential and integral Calculus with my students. I also like to explain the Unit Circle in Trigonometry. Although I know Geometry well, I do not tutor it because there has been little call for it during my tutoring years.
  • Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

In High School, a Mathematics teacher, Sr. Carmeline, was an inspiration to me. I owe much of my love for Mathematics to her.
In college, Dr. Manos, a Controls Theory Professor, and Dr. Smith, a Design Professor, were inspirations in my Engineering education.
  • What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

In my opinion the main qualities of a good tutor are as follows:
.. Good command of the subject matter
.. Good ability to communicate subject matter concepts to students effectively
    .. Personable/friendly disposition, during sessions
.. High level of patience, as needed, during sessions
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.

About 5 years ago, a student critically needed to get a good grade in Physics to enter a PhD program in Occupational Therapy. I was contacted and accepted the task to assist with Physics. We met once or twice a week for 14 weeks. Of course, It was my expectation that the student would attempt the problem set first and we jointly did the more difficult problems together. I was impressed by the student's tenacity in learning the subject matter.
After her final exam, I was informed that she received an A in the class and was accepted into the PhD program, as well.
This true event is but a single example of how dedication can lead to success.
  • What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or still facing in your subject?

One challenge faced by myself and other tutors (especially in tutoring Mathematics), is, sometimes, the lack of deep student Math foundation going back to Middle School. When I notice this, I make certain to review key areas that may have been forgotten by the student. I do not mind doing this at all and it allows the student to comprehend the course at hand more readily.
  • Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?

My passion is to help students achieve their goals by tutoring the STEM courses that are required in their curriculum.
  • What makes you a Superprof (besides answering this interview questions :-P)?

I believe the fact that I possess the qualities listed in #4 above makes me a Superprof. In addition, I believe our nation needs more students desiring to enter one of the fields in STEM. It is my hope that I can help increase the success of those students desiring a career in STEM.
