About Bradley

I come from a family of educators. Both of my parents have taught at the high school and college level for more than thirty years. My sister, for her part, is a counselor at a middle school. As an attorney, writing is my life, and punctuality and professionalism are non-negotiable character traits. With me, you can expect a friendly, organized, and dedicated tutor who is equipped with the tools to help you become a better student. My hope is that my love of writing and of literature will be contagious, and that you, too, will learn to love the written word!

About the lesson

My goal is to help high school students, undergraduates, and graduate students read and write more effectively. To that end, each student's program will be personalized to some degree; however, a typical plan for a writing assignment might include:

- Initial meeting to discuss assignment and important deadlines
- Discuss potential topics/arguments
- Aid student in selecting a topic
- Aid student in researching by teaching effective research methods and techniques
- Aid student in outlining assignment
- Two drafts to be reviewed and discussed before final submission

Reading assignments, especially book-length assignments will require at least two weeks between the start of the tutoring relationship and the end of the class unit on the material. This is to give me a chance to read (or reread) the text. From there, we would first discuss any words or passages that you might not have understood. We would then review the prior meeting's reading assignment for comprehension, before moving on to themes and analysis. Through the process, I will work to show you how to identify important themes and passages, and to teach you effective close reading techniques.

Details

My first 'lesson' is free, as this will be a 30-minute consultation. In this abbreviated session, we will discuss your assignment, deadlines, and tutoring needs. Presuming that we are a good fit, we will work together on a rough outline of our program together. At the second session, I will come with a full syllabus outline complete with draft deadlines and review dates (for a writing assignment) or page numbers and review dates (for reading assignments).
