About Valerie
I'm currently a college student studying Child and Adolescent Development and work as a teacher. I've always enjoyed working with students and helping them build confidence in their academic abilities.
I have over four years of tutoring experience working with elementary, middle, and high school students. I've helped students improve their reading comprehension, essay writing, and overall understanding of English coursework. My goal is to make learning inclusive and help students feel more confident in their skills. I have helped students to raise their grades, score better on tests, and win writing competitions.
I also have experience tutoring students for the AP Literature and Composition exam. I earned a 5 on the AP Lit exam myself and have helped other students work toward high scores. I plan lessons around literary analysis practice, thesis development, essay writing, and AP-style timed prompts.
I understand that every student learns differently, so I tailor lessons to each student's needs and goals. Whether you're preparing for the AP Literature exam, working to improve your writing, or just need extra support in English class, I'm here to help you succeed!

I specialize in preparations for any English assessments such as the AP Literature and Composition exam. I also work with students grades 8-12 who are seeking support with general English coursework, essay writing, and literary analysis.
Students can expect to work towards the following goals to be ready for the AP Literature and Composition exam.
- Understanding how to analyze literature and idenfify literary devices.
- Being able to analyze the effect of these literacy devices on the meaning of a piece of writing.
- Write a timed essay of an AP prompt that effectively
answers the prompt and provides ample analysis.
We will look through diverse pieces commonly applicable in the writing portion of the AP literature exam. Example books may include:
- Crime and Punishment
- The Odyssey
Achieving these goals during lessons will look like:
- Thesis writing practice
- Essay writing practice
- Writing Analysis vs. Summary practice
- AP test prompt time writes
- Reviewing literary devices
- Analysis of different books applicable on the AP exam
