About Cherry

I'm a native speaker of both Cantonese and Mandarin, passionate about connecting with people worldwide and sharing the richness of Chinese language and culture. Teaching is not just my profession, but my way of preserving and passing on heritage. I feel a deep personal mission to promote Cantonese, the language of my roots, while also supporting learners of Mandarin, which is widely studied around the world.

I was formally trained to teach Chinese as a second language and love helping others engage with the language through meaningful and enjoyable learning. I teach both Traditional and Simplified Chinese characters, depending on the learner’s needs and goals. I also practise Chinese calligraphy and have a deep appreciation for the evolution of script styles — from ancient forms such as seal and clerical script to the traditional and modern characters used today. Tai Chi has been part of my life since childhood — my mother is a Tai Chi coach — and I also enjoy meditation as a way to stay grounded. I believe language learning is a journey of cultural connection, and I bring that spirit into every lesson I teach.

About the lesson

I teach Mandarin and Cantonese to adult learners of all levels, from complete beginners to more advanced speakers. My lessons are practical, engaging, and tailored to each learner’s needs, whether you're learning for travel, heritage, work, or personal interest. I focus on real-life communication and clear pronunciation, while also introducing cultural elements to bring the language to life. Lessons typically last 60 minutes and include speaking, listening, grammar support, and personalised feedback. I hold a Master’s degree in East Asian Languages and Cultures from Columbia University and have over 10 years of teaching experience in London, Hong Kong, and San Diego, California, as well as online.

To support new students in finding the right fit, I offer a discounted trial lesson at £20. Regular hourly rate is £28 for ongoing sessions. This structure helps establish a strong learning connection from the outset.
