About Jiaqi

In Mandarin, you can say "I tomorrow go park" and that’s a perfectly grammatically correct sentence - It’s really not that hard!

Hi! My name is Jiaqi. I'm from Xi'an (I know the best place in London for Biangbiang noodles!), and I’ve called London home for the past 8 years. I came to London to complete my Master’s degree in Teaching… and then I stayed for love!

I’ve spent 10+ years teaching languages. I worked as Learning Manager at one of London’s largest Mandarin language institutions (you can guess which one!). So I know London learners pretty well - I know that everyone has a different reason for learning Chinese.

About the lesson

My teaching style is task-based and guided-discovery, which means you’ll be at the centre of the lesson - working things out, asking questions, experimenting with the language and, actually using Mandarin.

I’ll guide you rather than simply give you all the answers. We might work through a real-life situation, solve a little Chinese character puzzle, have a conversation, or explore something you’d encounter in China.

And yes, there will be grammar. But I promise it's super fun and honestly one of my favourite things to teach, because Chinese grammar is fascinating!

- More than just language

One of my favourite things about teaching Mandarin is that I get to share modern Chinese culture, not just vocabulary and fluency.

I also run cultural workshops alongside my teaching - I’ve taught Mahjong to some wonderfully interesting clients! If you watched Crazy Rich Asians and want to channel your inner Michelle Yeoh... I can teach you too!

Over the years, I’ve made genuine friendships with some of my students, and a few have even become lifelong friends. That’s one of the reasons I love it so much.

- Where and how we can learn

In-person lessons in London

I offer in-person lessons around London, and we can keep things relaxed and informal. We can meet in a café or another suitable public space, or I can come to your home where appropriate.

For safeguarding reasons, I’m not able to visit the home of a male student when we would be there alone together. I hope you understand.

In-person lessons are usually 90 minutes. I genuinely believe this gives your brain enough time to settle into Mandarin, get past the initial “my brain is working in another language!" stage, and actually start engaging with the language.

- Online lessons

Online lessons are usually 60 minutes, which works well for focused conversation practice, grammar, pronunciation and shorter, targeted lessons, without having to sit in front of a screen for too long!

- What do we use?

I have plenty of my own teaching materials and resources, so you don't need to spend hours hunting for a textbook before we start.

But if you already have a textbook, course, app, or other materials you love, I'm more than happy to work with those too. There’s no need to throw away something that’s already working for you!

Come and learn Mandarin with me - we’ll learn the language, but hopefully have a good laugh along the way too!
