About Charlie
I've always loved learning. However, I didn't always love school. Sometimes the classroom environment actively stands as an obstacle to your learning, rather than being able to help it. As someone who has benefited firsthand from one on one tuition, I understand the importance of establishing a rhythm around the student, finding out what makes them tick and, not just helping them to ace their exam, but to really love their subject in a broader sense. This will give them the tools to speak passionately and learn in a more nuanced way than just familiarising themselves with the mark scheme. I discovered my love of English as a subject because I realised that I could use the skills and my passion for reading that I had gained reading books for pleasure to grow my understanding of the exam's core texts. I want to use this approach to inspire students to read around their subjects, to take a genuine interest in their subject that will last beyond the exam date and, hopefully, throughout the rest of their lives. If I am able to get my students genuinely excited about learning new things, developing a love for the subject, I will consider our sessions a success and they will be well on their way to acing their exams.

I will start my lessons by having a casual, preliminary, general discussion with the student about the core texts of the subjects. The aim of this is to get an understanding of their level of knowledge on the subject, but also to begin discussing some of their opinions on some of the key questions and arguments. Very often, students construct their arguments in an exam room based only on what information they can remember in the moment, often at the expense of the essay. My first aim will be to discourage this and to encourage students to frame their revision, firstly, around constructing solid arguments and, secondly, around accumulating enough knowledge and perspectives to construct counter-arguments, making their ability to grasp multiple viewpoints clear to the examiner. I will measure progress by their ability to answer questions in a non-formulaic but still substantial manner in significant depth and will encourage personally held conviction behind their arguments so that they will answer questions based on their own opinions and conclusions. If this is achieved, their essays should improve to an impressive degree.
