About Tanner

I was a teacher by trade for 7 years, but I have also been tutoring professionally for more than 15. I have been able to work with more than 60 students in a one-on-one setting for more than 2,000 hours combined and countless students in a small group setting. The students whom I have instructed have been from Washington state; New York City; Louisville, KY; China; Korea; Taiwan; and Jordan. Some have had mild, documented learning disabilities, others have had almost no prior English vocabulary, and one was a professor at a prestigious university preparing for the GRE. In high school I was awarded the distinctions of National Merit Scholar and AP Scholar for my high academic achievement. I scored perfect scores on every collegiate exam’s math section (PSAT, SAT, SAT II Math II, ACT) and a near perfect overall on the ACT (35 out of 36). This, along with being awarded more than a full scholarship to Purdue University’s honors engineering program and almost complete scholarship to Columbia University’s Fu Foundation School of Engineering, has equipped me with the skills and experience needed to guide students of all backgrounds toward reaching their full potential in the college admissions process.

About the lesson

Tutoring affords opportunities that classroom teaching does not. In a one-on-one tutoring session, I seek to leverage those opportunities to their maximum potential. Each student is unique in his/her learning style, prior understanding, and motivation. Through tutoring, I seek to learn how each student is uniquely wired, so that I can best serve his/her needs. I also believe that it is more important to care for the student holistically as a human than to simply approach tutoring as a set of problems to solve. There are all kinds of factors outside of tutoring that can block successful instruction and genuine gestures of care go a long way to unblock learning. Having successfully worked with such a diverse set of students in the past, I believe that I am uniquely qualified to continue to serve the needs of all kinds of students who I will meet in the future.
