About Arijan

Having spent 12 years in two different education systems, on two different continents, one learns very quickly the advantages, and disadvantages, of polar opposite systems. I was born in Croatia, and have spent the first 13 years of my life there. Here I have learned the duty one holds to a pupil, as well as the importance of going in-depth with a given topic. As such, I don't view teaching someone as a job, rather it is a duty one holds to properly, and accurately, pass down knowledge while being selfless in the process. As such, I am completely devoted to the pupil during the session and after. If a pupil has a hard time grasping a concept, it is my duty to go to the ends of the earth, if need be, for him to fully appreciate and understand said concept. I believe in fact based learning above all, for how is one to be critical of something if they don't have the evidence to support their critique?
As for me, I like to spend my free time playing chess, reading classics (ie. Livy, Celsus, Goethe, Zola), designing and building various technological aids, writing philosophy and fiction, and working out.

About the lesson

About me: Hello all, my name is Arijan! I am a high school graduate taking a year off. I have spent seven years in the European education system, and five years in the North American education system, respectively. My approach to education is a mix of both where I combine the topical rigour of European education, with the emphasis on developing critical thinking skills that the North American system provides! (ie. connecting events of antiquity with modern issues).
Math, Sciences: When it comes to the matters of mathematics, I like to take a more European approach where I teach what the numbers actually mean, as well as encourage the use of mental math, as well as other analog methods of doing mathematics (ie. algorithms). This helps kids grasp complex topics like trigonometry in a more organic manner, while making simpler topics that much easier! Doing math "by-hand" helps develop better critical thinking skills, and it also helps kids unlock their true mathematical potential.
ELA, Social Studies: I like to take a more North American approach when teaching language arts. I gravitate towards helping kids understand what they are actually writing about, or what they are intended to find when given a reading. This goes for different kinds of essays they will face at school, teaching them not only how to write, but how to stand out from their peers!
Chess: If your kid is interested in chess, I teach everything from the basic movement of individual pieces, to analyzing grandmaster level games! On top of that, I provide resources for them to learn on their own.

- I teach all levels except for Math 30-1.
- My rate is $25 per hour regardless of what topic is being taught. I don't charge extra if I need to stay for a little longer.
