About Nirosan

Hi, I'm a recent grad from the University of Toronto's Math Specialist program. I struggled with math growing up. This gives me a unique perspective on what makes math so difficult for so many people.

**My hypothesis for why math is so hard for students:**

Math is difficult because it is abstract. Our thoughts are typically concerned with concrete things like dogs, cats, cars, tv, etc. Concrete things don't start off being easy, but over time we come to understand them through experience and with the help of mental models. Mathematical concepts on the other hand are abstract and don't often appear in the real world directly, which makes it difficult for us to form models of them in our minds (ex. when you last encountered a negative number directly?). The goal of mathematical education is to help students become familiar with these new types of objects, and many of the failings the Canadian math curriculum come down to its assumption that everyone learns to use and represent these objects in the same way.
