About Chris

Why do you want a tutor?
Your answers will vary! Maybe you are a student and want the best result you can get, whether that be straight A's or just to pass the subject. Maybe you are a parent and want your child to do well, but struggle to find the words or understand how to motivate them in an essential subject.

Mathematics is like a city. Sometimes it feels foreign with signs you don't understand. What you need is a native. Someone who has lived all their life in the area who knows the sights, the shortcuts and the bad neighbourhoods. A high-level understanding and experience can be invaluable, whatever your goal.

Why do I enjoy tutoring?
I never had a tutor, so my goal is to give the kind of wisdom and experience I wish I had when I was studying for my exams. I want to help parents who need help and don't get enough from school.

I want to make my students excited by considering something from a different perspective or understand the relevance of what they are learning. When someone understands something they didn't before, this is a reward in itself. Mathematics is a truly beautiful subject that is all around us.

About the lesson

Hi,

I'm Chris and have been tutoring for almost 15 years. I mainly teach mathematics for secondary school students, but I have also taught English and the new Mathematics for Applications Nat 5. I can extend to university level tuition for students who are not taking a pure math degree who could benefit from insight from someone who understands the math at a fundamental level. I have also taught subjects at university level on-campus and remotely for a number of years where I received excellent feedback from my students for approachability, clarity and dedication.

The typical lesson length would be 1-2 hrs per week, leaning towards longer. This gives time to review homework and make progress onto new material. Extra lessons closer to exam time are available subject to availability. Lessons would be tailored to the student as not all students struggle with the same material or learn in the same way. The ideal student for me is one who has motivation to learn and who understands the value of practice. Communication between student and teacher is also important to me as it allows the student to be confident about asking for help. There are no stupid questions!
