About Hamzah

Hello! I am a fifth-year Pure Mathematics major at Cal Poly Pomona with a minor in Philosophy. I have two years of experience tutoring privately in mathematics and chemistry subject areas. I am extremely passionate about mathematics and am looking to help students thrive in their high school and college level mathematics courses. I was not always interested or even particularly great at mathematics. I originally was admitted as a chemistry student and was initially turned off by what felt like procedural memorization. It was only after working through a logic textbook and jumping into proof-based mathematics that I realized that I had been approaching mathematics in a way that just wasn't satisfying or entirely clear for me (I've found that many of my clients have felt similarly). This led me to take an Introductory Real Analysis course upon a professor's recommendation and despite it being the most failed upper-division mathematics course at my university (I didn't even have all of the prerequisites!), I ended the course with a B+ and had enjoyed the class so much so that I immediately decided to switch majors to mathematics and have been studying and tutoring on the subject ever since! I primarily have emphasized mathematical logic as my specialization and I believe this specialization puts me in an exceptional position as a mathematics tutor. This is because unlike other areas of mathematics which are more focused on finding solutions to otherwise high-level, complex problems, mathematical logic is more focused on explicating and making rigorous what is often implicitly assumed in lower-level high school to college mathematical education. In ordinary mathematics, one might simply move from one equation to the next, having performed an algebraic operation which the reader is expected to "just know" holds (Ex: Why sin^2(x)+cos^2(x)=tan^2(x)). In mathematical logic however, you are forced to justify and make explicit every little detail from one mathematical statement to the next. This emphasis has, I believe, made it much easier for me to tutor students since I'm able to more readily and precisely identify and explicate the specific mistakes that students are making in their mathematical work. I'm also more keenly aware when a student seems to misunderstand a particular definition or formula's applicability. I believe that my emphasis makes it such that I'm able to more comfortably move between levels of implicit understanding depending on student ability. This is something that makes me stand out compared to other tutors teaching the topic.

I provide virtual tutoring sessions for High-School to Lower College Level Mathematics subjects, featuring personalized notes and practice problems. My sessions are typeset in LaTeX and all notes are saved and accessible by clients whom can leave comments or concerns regarding material we've covered. (If you have questions, feel free to message me and I can provide samples)

I have two years experience tutoring High-School and College Mathematics and Chemistry (although I am currently only offering mathematics tutoring). I do my best to adjust my teaching style based on student need and take a more logic-oriented approach to my instruction.

Details

My services are based on number of sessions and whether the sessions are scheduled in advance.
- As needed sessions are $35/hr.
- If you are willing to pay up-front for 5 hours, my rate is $30/hr (so $150).
- If you are willing to pay up-front for 10 or more hours, my rate is $25/hr (so $250).

For in-advance sessions or if you are a regular client, I answer minor questions and provide hints for problems free of charge via direct message.

My sessions come with typeset notes (I will typically write up a rough template that is filled in during our lecture). I use mathcha.io which allows me to type out mathematical formulas and display graphs and tables quickly.

I request when scheduling an appointment that material is provided in advance corresponding to course expectations. Instructors can vary in their coverage and emphasis on various topics so I prefer to have an idea in advance on the sorts of problems the student will be expected to solve so that I can best prepare them for success in the course.
