Example-Problem Pairs:
Instead of presenting a block of worked examples followed by conventional problems, use example-problem pairs.
Start with a single worked example, followed by a related problem. Then introduce a slightly different worked example and another problem.
Gradually increase complexity with each pair. For instance:
Pair 1: Same problem structure.
Pair 2: Convert units (e.g., km to m) before solving.
Pair 3: Introduce distance calculations.
Continue varying problem types.
Research shows that students who work with example-problem pairs perform better and retain information more effectively1.
Science Mastery Approach:
Address supposed contradictions between mathematics and science.
Ensure consistent language in both subjects.
Explicitly teach relevant maths skills within the science curriculum2.
Cognitive Load Theory:
Recognize that the 2016 GCSE changes added more challenging maths content to science subjects.
Use strategies to make this content accessible:
Scaffold learning with example-problem pairs.
Consider individual student needs and abilities.
Connect practical applications to theoretical concepts.
Encourage problem-solving skills.
Remember that practical imaginations in physics can enhance understanding and engagement1.
Personalized Learning:
Tailor your teaching to individual students’ strengths and preferences.
Use real-world examples and practical scenarios to illustrate mathematical concepts in physics.
Encourage students to explore connections between the two subjects.
Assessment and Feedback:
Regularly assess student understanding through formative assessments.
Provide constructive feedback to guide improvement.
Use a mix of written assessments, practical experiments, and problem-solving tasks.
