About Pfano

I am a Mechanical engineering graduate. My tutoring experience goes back as far as 2015 when I collaborated with my former high school friends to establish our own tutoring organisation. This organisation has been assisting local learners in physical sciences and mathematics.

  • When did you develop an interest in your subject and in private tutoring?

My desire to tutor physics and mathematics dates back to 2014 when I was tasked with voluntary tasks to help my local community academy. It was then when I realised the joy I find in imparting knowledge to hungry minds.
  • Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).

I really enjoy teaching mathematics, physics and thermodynamics. As an engineer, I have been exposed to so much knowledge and I have fallen in love with these subjects in the process.
  • Did you have any role models? Perhaps a teacher that inspired you?

I grew up looking up to my parents who are still such an inspiration to me. Both my parents were teachers, teaching came naturally to me.
  • What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

I think what makes a good tutor is a love for the subject, someone who is in love with a certain subject finds it easy to explain to others. Secondly, a good tutor must have great interpersonal skills. I believe each learner is unique and therefore needs to be treated accordingly. Accommodating learners requires someone who is patient and passionate about teaching.
  • Share an anecdote related to your subject or your school days.

In my final year of studies, I was tasked with research on the feasibility of a parabolic trough solar collector in South African regions. I fell in love with the topic so much I decided to build my own solar system whose aim is the production of crispy chips using only the sun's energy. I am still working on improving this innovative system whose success would greatly benefit the local community.
  • What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or are still facing at school?

The most challenging period of my school days was when I lost my bursary. I struggled financially until my grades improved, getting my sponsorship in the process.
  • Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general, an element of this particular subject, or something completely different?

I am most passionate about teaching, teaching makes me feel a sense of purpose. As challenging as it may be, I really enjoy overcoming all the challenges that come with it.
  • What makes you a Superprof?

I think what makes me a Superprof is my desire to make a change through education. I am always willing to go the extra mile to help my learners.
