About James
Hi, I’m James! I’m currently a medical student at Brighton and Sussex Medical School, having successfully navigated the medical school application process myself.
I grew up in Wales and, after achieving A*s in Biology, Chemistry and Mathematics at A level, secured my place at medical school. Since then, I’ve progressed through 3 years of medical education, giving me a good understanding of both the academic demands of medicine and the qualities needed to succeed beyond the classroom. I also have experience invigilating at my medical school interviews, and therefore know first-hand what is required from prospective students.
I remember how competitive and sometimes confusing the application process can feel. There are so many different things to think about — UCAT preparation, choosing medical schools, personal statements, work experience, interviews and MMIs — and it can be difficult to know where to start or what you should actually be focusing on.
Having been through this process myself, from a rural Welsh school, I want to help make it feel much more manageable. My approach is relaxed, honest and completely tailored to you. Rather than giving you generic advice or asking you to memorise scripted answers, I’ll help you understand what medical schools are looking for and develop your own skills, experiences and confidence.
Whether you’re at the beginning of your application journey or have an interview coming up, I’ll work with you 1:1 to identify your strengths, address your weaknesses and make sure you feel as prepared as possible.
If you’re considering applying to medicine and would like some friendly, practical guidance from someone who has recently been through the process, please get in touch!

Applying to medical school can feel like a daunting process. From preparing for the UCAT and deciding where to apply, to writing your personal statement and tackling interviews, there are a lot of different challenges to navigate — often while keeping up with A levels at the same time.
My 1:1 medicine application tuition is designed to make the process more manageable, structured and personalised to you. As a current medical student, I can offer practical advice based on my own experience of applying to medical school, while helping you develop the skills and confidence needed at each stage of the process.
Sessions can be tailored around whatever you need most, including:
• UCAT preparation – understanding each section, developing effective strategies, working through difficult questions and improving your timing and approach.
• Personal statement support – helping you identify and communicate your experiences, motivations and understanding of medicine in a genuine and effective way.
• Medical school applications – discussing university choices, entry requirements and how to approach the application process strategically.
• Interview preparation – practising common medical school interview questions, MMI stations and ethical scenarios, while developing clear, structured and confident answers.
• Mock interviews – realistic 1:1 practice followed by constructive feedback on your answers, communication and areas for improvement.
Every session will be tailored to your current stage, strengths and goals. Whether you’re just starting to think about medicine or are approaching your interview, I’ll help you break the process down into manageable steps and make sure you feel prepared rather than overwhelmed.
The aim isn’t to give you scripted answers — it’s to help you understand what medical schools are looking for and develop the confidence to present your own experiences and ideas effectively.

I know James personally. I appreciate his tailored lessons, he really attempts to understand where there is a knowledge gap and organises teaching and resources specifically for that goal. He helped me in medical school on our anatomy table.
I would highly recommend him as a tutor.View more recommendations
