About Nic

I am a Melbourne-based street photographer and visual artist with experience photographing in Melbourne, Thailand, Malaysia, Myanmar, Japan and Vietnam. Photographing in different cities and cultures has taught me to adapt quickly, observe human behavior and recognize how light, architecture and everyday moments can create meaningful street photos.

I created the Melbourne Street Photography website, which currently ranks number one in Google for the search “street photo melbourne.” I also administer the Street Photography Melbourne Facebook page and stay connected with the wider street photography community.

My interest goes beyond camera technique. I am interested in how a photographer develops a personal vision, aesthetic and way of representing the world. I want to teach because I enjoy helping other photographers recognize what is distinctive about their own work and express it more clearly through their images.

About the lesson

I teach street photography as a way of seeing, not simply a set of camera settings. During guided Melbourne photo walks, we explore light, shadow, composition, timing, layering and how to recognise meaningful moments in everyday life.

My knowledge of Melbourne helps me choose routes with strong photographic opportunities while considering the time of day, changing light, accessibility and current street conditions. I also prioritise the student’s comfort and safety by avoiding situations or locations that may be unsafe or unpredictable.

Most importantly, I help each photographer develop their own vision and aesthetic. We explore different traditions, styles and contemporary approaches to street photography, but the aim is not to imitate another photographer. It is to understand what interests you, what you want to express and how you want to represent yourself through your street photos.

Online lessons can include portfolio reviews, image analysis, editing guidance and practical exercises. Lessons are suitable for beginners and developing photographers using a digital camera, film camera or phone.

Details

In-person street photography walks are held at agreed public locations in central Melbourne and require a minimum two-hour booking. Online lessons can be booked for one hour and may include portfolio feedback, image analysis, editing guidance and practical shooting exercises. The complimentary 30-minute introductory session is conducted online and is used to discuss your experience, interests, photography goals and preferred lesson format.
