Fall 1975 through Winter 1976 University of Colorado - Math Major / music minor (3 semesters) Studied music theory at the University of Colorado under professors Paris Rutherford (Regent of Jazz Studies - University of North Texas), and Dr. William L. Fowler (Downbeat magazine education editor, Segovia alumnus, and co-inventor of the piezo pickup).
Studied Piano with Jazz piano great Hank Troy in Denver. Studied Saxophone with Dr. Matt Zebley (alto saxophonist w/ Brian Setzer Orchestra and Director of Jazz Studies at Diablo Valley College · Pleasant Hill, CA). Studied Classical Violin under Maestra Rebecca Price.
-Teaching and Performing Experience-
Eight years teaching ESL (English as a Second Language) for The inlingua International School of Languages. Five of those years in Switzerland, and three years as director of their school on the island of Tenerife in the Canaries.
Upon my return to the States, I began giving music lessons in several stores and schools around SoCal, and then found my ‘home’ and taught full-time continuously at the same music store in Riverside, California from the Spring of 2001 thru Spring of 2020 when I began teaching exclusively online.
I have over three decades of experience as a teacher both one-on-one and in groups at all levels and ages, and fifty years of performance experience.
I’ve done thousands and thousands of gigs all over Europe and the United States: solo jazz piano, jazz combos, folk groups, rock bands, horn ensembles, discos, festivals, weddings, funerals, private parties, clubs, pubs, restaurants, casinos, beer tents, dance troupes, concert halls, country clubs, casuals, dive bars, pickup gigs, backyard barbecues, pretty much you name it.
I have been fortunate enough throughout my life to be able to make my living off of Music (and still do!).
I am currently the Musical Director and Lead Singer for my modern Jazz septet horn band. Also I write all the arrangements for every instrument in the ensemble.
I hope to hear from you soon! Thanks, Jeff

Not every saxophonist is an instructor. Jeff Brent is an experience musician who plays many different instruments including the
saxophone. When I connect with him for my saxophone lessons, he is well prepared to teach me. I feel hopeful that in the year 2026, I will grow immensely because I have found the right teacher for myself.I have know Jeff for many years and we often played live music together all over SoCal. He is an outstanding musician, multi-instrumentalist, often writes arrangements to fit the lineup including horn parts, and expresses things in a way that others can understand and relate to. Highly recommend!
Jeff has been my music teacher for years now. If you're hesitant about taking lessons because it's hard to vet what you'll be getting out of it, I encourage you to go with Jeff because he never left a stone unturned. He's also personable and responds quickly to any questions I have. You'll be getting much more out of it than you think, so don't hesitate. just do it. Trust me!
Jeff was my tenor sax instructor. He is very knowledgeable and a great instructor. Jeff was very patient and understanding. He has an incredible background in music and is multi-instrumental. Two big thumbs up for this instructor.
Jeff is the best. He started teaching our eldest daughter a year ago. Like most kids, she has given up instruments along the way or not clicked with their teachers. Jeff is different - she looks forward to classes with him every week and actually practices between them! In fact, Jeff is so good that I now have him teach me bass guitar. So we go from her class, straight on to my class - and we look forward to that every week!
Our familey has been blessed to have Jeff as my sons music teacher . Jeff is patient , always punctual and understanding . Jeff has got my son able to jam on gutair. He teaches multiple Genres and styles. We are happy that Jeff is in our family.
When I decided I needed a specific type of music teacher to match what I wanted to learn, Jeff stood out to me. He is a professional musician who can also teach creatively. Every lesson with Jeff is inspiring. He uses clear, well-planned teaching techniques to guide me in each week's learning goals. I can feel my confidence and my instrument skills develop steadily. Jeff is encouraging and gives me constructive feedback. We always start and finish each music lesson with positivity and I'm so glad he is my teacher!
Jeff has been my teacher for over 2 years, a music store here in Vista, CA gave me a card to connect. He's an extremely knowledgeable musician who knows more about music than most, teaching me to play without reading notes. I feel he's very even keeled, non-reactive and always has an answer to my questions. He makes learning fun and creative too, and I always look forward to my lessons.
Jeff is a phenomenal instructor. His ability to structure his lessons to my skill level surpassed my expectations. Great instructor/great person.
Jeff is an amazingly wonderful guitar teacher and musician. He has been providing my son with lessons for the past 7 years. We started taking my son to lessons with Jeff at a local music store, then once the pandemic the lessons became virtual, which was actually a great shift, because now while away at college he can still have lessons with Jeff. If you are interested in an instructor who is patient and has a vast background in music and beyond I would suggest working with Jeff.
