About Fiachra

I am a violin and viola player specialising in performance in classical music. My main goal as a teacher is to help students find their passion and love for music and for playing an instrument. I am also very practical in my approach to teaching, always trying to make things as clear as possible for each and every student to understand. When teaching young children, I have found that using various different games with and without the instrument help a lot with their understanding and development. This often resonates well, given their impressive desire and ability to play in other aspects of their life for hours every day. I think it is very important for young children to make the most of this time in their early years, especially since the rewards of learning an instrument as a child can be immensely powerful, shaping their development later in life. I have given classes in various different forms throughout my career, mainly one on one, but also chamber music group masterclasses and organising performance classes for my students. My biggest love for music lies in chamber music, and I have been very fortunate to have been invited to festivals such as the Prussia Cove Open Chamber Music, Clandeboye Festival Northern Ireland, Westport Festival of Chamber Music, Ortus Festival in Cork, GAIA Festival in Switzerland, and in many other concert series and venues around Europe. As a soloist I have given a sold-out recital at Ireland's National Concert Hall Kevin Barry Recital Room, performed solo with the Ulster Orchestra and CVA Symphony Orchestra and recorded Bach with Camerata Ireland. Joined by my string quartet 'The Gealan Quartet', I have given national tours around Ireland over the past number of years and taken part in an artistic residency at the Centre Culturel Irlandais in Paris. I have also performed extensively with The Netherlands Philharmonic Orchestra, Netherlands Chamber Orchestra, Irish Chamber Orchestra, National Symphony Orchestra of Ireland, Ulster Orchestra, and invited as principal viola for the Tchaikovsky Camerata (London) and Le Foyer des Artistes (Northern Ireland). I have also been a prize winner at the Oskar Nedbal International Viola Competition in Prague, the Netherlands National Viola Competition, Flax Trust Music Awards (UK) and Feis Ceoil (Ireland).

About the lesson

As a teacher, I am always looking to work alongside my students to solve a problem, always working it out step-by-step with them, and helping them develop their critical thinking and problem-solving skills. When teaching young children, I use imaginative imagery and games to help explain theoretical concepts in a way that children can understand. My methodology is tailored to each individual student, with a focus on providing enjoyment of the individual lessons as much as possible.

I have been taking piano lessons with Fiachra for the past couple of weeks, and my experience has been nothing short of exceptional. When I first started, I was a complete beginner with no prior knowledge of reading music or playing an instrument. Fiachra’s patient and encouraging teaching style made me feel comfortable and confident from the very first lesson.
