About Louis-Dominique

Bonjour! Je m’appelle Louis.

Thank you for reading my ad.

I’m a native speaker of French, from Québec. I can help you improve your French proficiency. I prefer to put the emphasis on natural conversation, but if you just need to be able to read it, I can help too. I’ve been in your shoes, so to speak. I have studied languages other than English or French. Some of them only for reading purposes for my Ph.D. but some for actually speaking with other people.

Do not let my background mislead you. Tutoring is now my principal occupation. It is not a “side hustle.” When I’m not in the midst of tutoring, I’m constantly thinking about how to communicate my knowledge, and I’m constantly expanding the realm of topics that I tutor in.

I have taught at the university level at the University of Virginia, and at Dickinson College. Prior to teaching, I was a note taker for some of my visually impaired colleagues. I’ve been tutoring formally for about three years now, mostly mathematics.

My background is rather eclectic. I was born in Montréal, Canada, and lived there for the first 25 years of my life. I acquired a bachelor's degree in Computer Engineering from École Polytechnique de Montréal while I was living there. Then I moved to the USA. Here, I acquired a master's in South Asia Studies from the University of Pennsylvania, and then a Ph.D. in Religion from the University of Virginia. I’ve also studied for a time in India, and Taiwan.

About the lesson

Call me strange, but I think a tutor is the ideal environment for making mistakes. You are not being evaluated by a teacher, nor are you in a situation where it is critically important to convey your ideas. I’m here to help you be better.

Now, if the student is taking a formal French class and has pressing problems to work through, they can bring specific problems to my attention. We can then work on these problems, and I can explain the theory as needed.

I’m looking forward to working with you. If you have questions, please ask.
