When it comes to math, I like to use analogies to make concepts easier to understand. I also like to use many example problems, and create steps for the student to follow, explaining the reason behind each step. I usually leave theses steps with the student, for he or she to study from later. This allows the student to take something tangible with them, so that they are not struggling to remember what was taught.
