About Leo
I'm a graduate of Oberlin College and Conservatory, where I earned a BM in Jazz Piano Performance and a BA in Dance. I've been playing and writing music since I was shorter than a piano bench, and it's become my greatest joy and passion, whether playing in a jazz trio, or singing my own songs with my guitar! I've had the opportunity to teach private lessons in jazz piano and music theory at a college level to a wide variety of students - from classical pianists learning to improvise, to folk musicians and songwriters, to punk rockers, to students learning their first scales. No matter what musical landscapes you want to live in, I'd love to go there with you. If you're scared of learning music theory, don't worry, you're not alone! It can feel like a lot of numbers and abstract ideas. As a teacher and theory nerd it is my passion to teach these concepts in a way that's accessible and joyful - to enhance your understanding of the music YOU love and the music YOU make, no matter what kind!

My lessons focus on following what peaks your passion and what brings you joy! I believe that music theory should be descriptive, not prescriptive: instead of learning a set of rules to follow, I prefer to look behind the curtain of the music my students love to learn how it can help them to make powerful, original work. I ask my students to bring in songs they love or original compositions, regardless of genre, and we analyze it together, learning all the theoretical techniques that make it work. If a student wants to bring in a music theory homework assignment, I use it to teach them how to think musically, not just how to complete an assignment. I focus on ear training and harmonic/rhythmic analysis, as well as song-form and timbre. I am comfortable teaching all levels and backgrounds!
