About Gor

Looking for a patient, experienced chess coach who can make chess easier to understand and enjoyable to learn?

I’m Gor, a professional chess coach with 17+ years of playing and coaching experience. I work with children, teenagers and adults at all levels through personalised online lessons.

Every student is different, so I don’t use a one-size-fits-all approach. I adapt each lesson to your level, goals, playing style and learning needs.

Rather than simply teaching moves to memorise, I focus on helping you understand the ideas behind the position — how to calculate, recognise patterns, make plans and make better decisions independently.

My students have achieved strong results in tournaments and have made significant progress in both chess strength and confidence. I have also worked with students preparing for competitions as well as players who simply want to become better and enjoy the game more.

Students and parents often appreciate my calm and patient teaching style, clear explanations and structured lessons.

I teach in English, Russian, Armenian and Spanish and work with students across Australia and around the world.

Whether you are just starting out, trying to break through a rating plateau, or preparing for your next tournament, I’ll create a training approach that fits you.

Send me a message with your age, current level or rating, and your goal. I’ll be happy to suggest where we should start.

Every lesson is built around your level, your goals and your own games.

You won’t just sit and memorise moves. We’ll work together to understand positions, identify mistakes, recognise patterns and build the thinking process you can use in your own games.

What we can work on:

♟️ Tactics & calculation — recognise patterns, calculate variations and find stronger moves.

♟️ Strategy & positional understanding — learn how to evaluate positions and create practical plans.

♟️ Opening preparation — understand opening principles and build a repertoire that suits your playing style.

♟️ Middlegame — learn what to do when there is no obvious move and how to turn ideas into a practical plan.

♟️ Endgames — build the fundamental knowledge and practical skills needed to convert advantages.

♟️ Game analysis — analyse your own games, understand where things went wrong and identify what to work on next.

♟️ Tournament preparation — prepare your games, openings, mindset and practical decision-making before important competitions.

What makes my lessons different?

I don’t believe in giving every student the same lesson.

I ask questions, listen to your ideas and adapt the training to the way you think and play. My goal is for you to leave the lesson not only knowing a better move, but understanding why it is better.

The first lesson is also a chance for us to identify your strengths, weaknesses and goals and decide what training approach will help you most.

Beginners, children, adults and experienced tournament players are all welcome.

Send me a message with your current level or rating and what you would like to improve, and we can take it from there.

  • 1) When did you start practicing? How did this passion find you?

I started playing chess when I was 10 years old. My father introduced me to this wonderful game, and I fell in love with it right away. Later, I began attending classes and participating in tournaments.
At some point, I became deeply interested in coaching. Seeing my students’ progress and achievements inspired me to support them and help them grow. It brings me great joy, and I truly love what I do.
  • 2) Which artists or works inspire you the most?

I have been greatly inspired by the games of the world-renowned chess player and World Champion, Garry Kasparov. In his games, I found brilliant strategies and beautiful combinations. Analyzing his games helped me discover the full beauty of chess.
  • 3) What are the specific qualities or skills required to succeed in this area?

To succeed in chess, it is very important to be ready to go through difficulties. Beginners often lose and feel discouraged, but learning chess is a process that requires a lot of patience and the determination to never give up. Hard work and strong motivation are also essential.
  • 4) What is the most valuable advice you can give to help someone stay focused on creative projects?

First of all, a person should love what they do. This love becomes the foundation for staying focused and working with dedication. There are always excuses, but if you truly love your work and it is genuinely important to you, you will always find the time to do it.
  • 5) How would you describe your passion; how does it make you feel?

My passion for chess is a combination of love, curiosity, and inspiration. Coaching and playing chess make me feel fulfilled and motivated. When I see my students grow, succeed, and enjoy the game, I feel immense joy and pride. Chess brings me balance, excitement, and a sense of purpose in my life.
  • 6) What creative achievements are you particularly proud of?

I am especially proud of my students’ achievements. Seeing them win tournaments, improve rapidly, and develop a true love for chess gives me immense satisfaction. Additionally, creating structured lessons and training programs that help beginners and young children understand and enjoy chess is something I take great pride in.
  • 7) Have you ever been surprised by a student; by their ability or quick progression?

I have a 5-year-old student who is incredibly intelligent. He solves problems that are so complex, even adults find them challenging. I am amazed every time I see this. I truly believe he has a very bright future in chess.
  • 8) Being a Superprof is an art! What is your secret?

I believe the secret is passion, patience, and genuine care for my students. Every student is unique, so I focus on understanding their strengths, weaknesses, and learning style. I create lessons that are both challenging and enjoyable, so they stay motivated and curious. For me, teaching chess is not just about the game—it’s about inspiring confidence, critical thinking, and a love for learning.
