About Chris
GCSE Classical Civilisation Background
First-Class BSc Criminology Graduate
Completed MSc Study at UCL
I studied Classical Civilisation at GCSE, achieving a Grade 8, before continuing my education through A-Levels and university.
I later achieved a First-Class BSc in Criminology and completed an MSc in Countering Extremist Crime and Terrorism at University College London (UCL). My university studies have further developed many of the skills that are highly relevant to Classical Civilisation, including critical analysis, evaluating evidence, interpreting sources, constructing arguments and academic writing.
Having studied Classical Civilisation myself, I understand the challenge of balancing detailed knowledge of the ancient world with the ability to analyse sources and produce well-structured exam answers.
My approach is patient, structured and tailored to the individual student, with a focus on making complex material easier to understand while helping students become more confident in both their knowledge and exam technique.

GCSE Classical Civilisation Tuition
Mythology • Literature • Ancient Society • Source Analysis • Exam Technique
My lessons are tailored to each student’s exam board, chosen topics, current level and target grade. Before beginning, I establish exactly which areas of Classical Civilisation the student is studying so that each session is directly relevant to their course.
The first lesson is used to identify strengths, knowledge gaps and areas where marks are being lost. From there, I create a structured plan based on the student’s individual needs.
Lessons can include:
• Greek and Roman mythology
• Ancient literature and key texts
• Religion, society and culture
• Understanding and using ancient sources
• Developing analytical answers
• Essay planning and argument structure
• Improving use of evidence
• Exam technique and timed practice
• Understanding mark schemes and command words
My aim is to make Classical Civilisation clear, engaging and manageable, while helping students develop the subject knowledge, source skills and analytical ability needed to perform confidently in assessments and examinations.
Recommendations
Recommendations come from relatives, friends and acquaintances of the tutor.
I think teaching would suit him really well. He’s always been the person I go to when I need some research knowledge or professional perspective, especially when it comes to history. What stands out is that he never just gives you the answer; he actually takes hours to explain it properly until you get it. It’s actually so impressive.
One of his best strengths is he’s so good at making subjects feel less intimidating and more like something you can actually enjoy discussing.
Chris is very, very patient and never makes you feel embarrassed for not knowing something. I would 100% recommend him as a tutor.Chris is a close friend of mine, so I’ve had plenty of opportunities to see how he thinks and how passionate he is about his subjects. He can somehow turn a random conversation into a discussion about history, literature, Classics or criminology, and you can tell that he actually enjoys learning about these things rather than just memorising information.
I’ve had conversations with Chris where he’s explained topics to me for ages because I was curious about something, and he’s always been really good at breaking things down without making them feel overly complicated. He’s also very patient and never acts like a question is too obvious to ask.
What I particularly like about Chris is that he genuinely cares about the people around him. He’s supportive, approachable and someone I would feel completely comfortable asking for help. I think those qualities, alongside his knowledge, would make him a great tutor for students of different ages and abilities.I’ve known Chris for 4 years from university and have always been impressed by how genuinely passionate he is about his interests.
Chris is the kind of person who is patient, encouraging and easy to talk to. He never makes you feel uncomfortable for asking questions, and he takes the time to explain things properly rather than simply giving you an answer no matter how long it takes. He also tries very hard to adapt the way he explains something depending on the person he’s talking to.
I would definitely recommend Chris to other Superprof members and students looking for a tutor who is knowledgeable, approachable and committed to helping them build both their understanding and confidence.Chris helped me organise my ideas for essay-based work and made it much easier to understand how to turn knowledge into a clear argument. He asks questions rather than just telling you what to write, which helped me reach the answer myself. He’s knowledgeable but also easy to talk to, so it never feels intimidating asking basic questions. I would recommend him particularly to students who know the content but struggle with structuring their answers.
I know Chris through university and have worked with him on academic topics several times. He is particularly good at taking complicated ideas and breaking them into much simpler explanations without losing the important detail. He’s patient when someone doesn’t understand something immediately and will approach it from another angle rather than just repeating himself. I think his main strength as a tutor would be helping students understand why something works rather than simply giving them the answer.
