About Sam
After studying PPE, I qualified as a teacher via Teach First and taught secondary-level English and Economics for four years. I taught across Key stages 3-5, including both lower- and higher-ability sets, and my teaching was rated 'Outstanding' in lesson observations. For two years, I headed up a new Economics department, which involved planning the subject curriculum and assessments, and for three years running I have deepened my subject knowledge by serving as an examiner across all boards (OCR, AQA and Edexcel).
I have tutored in these subjects and Politics in London and Manchester for 3 years, helping students improve their working grades, improve their interview technique, pass their common entrance exams, and achieve the results they need to attend university. I offer online and face-to-face tuition, ranging from short-term exam prep to supporting a student across a year of their studies, and from international students moving to the UK, to students resitting their exams for perhaps the second or third time.
While teaching, I achieved an MA in Educational Leadership, which focused on how well GCSEs prepare students for success in Higher Education. I will shortly be returning to university to complete a part-time (long overdue) MA in Creative Writing.

No two students are the same, so no two lessons should be, either. This is the core of my teaching approach, underpinned by a strong foundation of subject knowledge from my studies and teaching experience.
As mentioned above, I have taught/tutored students of all academic backgrounds and abilities, and can differentiate my methods for a range of SEN (e.g. dysgraphia, dyslexia, dyscalculia, EAL, behavioural difficulties). Fundamentally, I continue to tutor because I hugely enjoy getting to understand each student as an individual, and I enjoy working with them to overcome their specific challenges.
In English, specifically, my approach is governed by a view that 'literature' and 'language' should not be understood in strict isolation, but rather that students of all ages should 'read as writers', and vice versa.
In Politics and Economics, I usually focus on the analytical building-blocks of writing persuasive, informed essays.
