About James

I have a PhD in Philosophy from the University of Georgia. I have 20 years of experience teaching philosophy in various universities and colleges. I have published two books and numerous articles in philosophy, and I won the 2021 Review of Metaphysics Dissertation Essay contest. Recently I have been invited to participate in a number of podcasts to discuss my work. I have a deep passion for philosophy and love to take every opportunity to discuss its ideas and explore how these ideas impact our world and lie at the often subconscious foundation of our own way of viewing the world. My particular areas of expertise are: History of Philosophy, Neoplatonism, Ancient Philosophy, Relational Ontology,m Philosophy of Religion, Ethics, Modern Philosophy, and Continental Philosophy.

In my view, the role of an educator is to facilitate learning. It is not to be a Pez dispenser standing in front of a class and opening one’s head to expel pieces of knowledge or truth like so many pieces of candy. Rather, it is, again in the words of Socrates in Plato’s Theaetetus, to act as a “midwife” assisting others to bring forth wisdom from themselves and helping students determine whether their “young mind is being delivered of a phantom, that is, an error, or a fertile truth.” Thus, a true educator spends more time asking questions of students and listening to their ideas than expounding one’s own ideas. A true educator helps others discover truth and examine ideas to reveal whatever valuable insights these ideas contain. The best source for the ideas which are to be so examined is the great thinkers throughout history, so this process begins with the texts of the great artists, poets, writers, scientists, historians, politicians, theologians, philosophers, etc. Thus, the true role of an educator is to help students learn to think, to free their minds from the conventions of contemporary culture so that they can understand that culture, question that culture, and shape the future development of that culture. This can only occur if students are encouraged and inspired to question and examine for themselves, diving headfirst into the great ideas that have shaped the world today. This necessarily entails developing a relationship with students whereby they feel comfortable enough to express ideas, opinions, doubts, questions, etc. In this vein, I see my role as a teacher of Philosophy as one in which I participate with the students in an examination of some of the great philosophical texts as we mutually develop our understanding of how these great thinkers relate to our own lives and the world today.
