About Michael

I am a Northumberland-based professional with a lifelong passion for science, learning, and sharing knowledge. By day, I work as a senior freelance IT consultant, advising businesses on technology strategy and digital transformation, which means I bring the same analytical rigour, clear, structured thinking and coaching and presentation skills to my tutoring that I apply to complex professional problems.

My academic background is rooted in Physics: a first-class BSc from the University of York and a PhD from the University of Birmingham gave me a deep, research-level understanding of the subject that goes well beyond what is needed at A-Level, and that depth of knowledge is something students genuinely benefit from.

Outside of work, I am an enthusiastic cook and an accomplished violinist. Music and cooking both share something important with good teaching: they all reward patience, precision, and a willingness to keep refining until you get it right.

Whether you are struggling to grasp a concept or pushing for top grades, I will bring the same dedication and enthusiasm to helping you succeed that I bring to everything else I do.

About the lesson

My lessons are designed to build genuine understanding, not just exam technique. I believe every student has a unique way of thinking, and my job is to find the missing piece that makes everything click into place.

Sessions typically run 45–60 minutes, pitched at the ideal concentration window for focused, productive learning. I teach Maths and Physics at GCSE and A-Level, working with students of all abilities who want to improve their confidence and results.

My approach is concept-first: I explain ideas in clear, logical steps, always asking why something works, not just what the answer is. I draw on real-world examples to bring abstract theory to life, and I take time to understand each student's interests and hobbies so that examples feel relevant and engaging rather than textbook-dry.

Before diving in, I identify each student's strengths and gaps at a conceptual level, unblocking the specific areas holding them back rather than covering ground they already know.

My credentials speak for themselves: a first-class BSc in Physics from the University of York, a PhD in Physics from the University of Birmingham, and experience as a teaching assistant to undergraduate Physics students at York. I have tutored A-Level Maths and Physics privately, and over the last 30 years, have helped dozens of students achieve their goals.
