About Phil

- What kind of experience do you have?

With over 10 years experience performing and teaching across all genres I believe that learning an instrument is one of the most enjoyable things out there! Whatever your age or experience I know that I can help you on your journey to becoming a better musician.

I am currently a lecturer at the University of Kent alongside my role as a musical director for the National Youth Jazz Orchestra's Academy programme. I also have several years experience in both primary and secondary education and a valid CRB certificate alongside up-to-date safeguarding training. I am comfortable teaching jazz, classical and popular music and happy to teach ABRSM/Trinity or prepare you for auditions/exams if you wish. I am equally happy working freely for fun and to grow without the added pressure.

My youngest student is 10 with my oldest at 65 and I pride myself on delivering fun, engaging and inspiring lessons based on thorough, well-researched methodology!

- Do you have an up-to-date DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service, formerly CRB) Certificate?

I have an up to date CRB and safeguarding training.

- Where and with whom did you train?

I have had the privalege to study at three of the UK's finest institutions with some of Europe's top Jazz and Classical musicians:

Trinity College of Music: Martin Speake, Julian Siegel, Jean Toussaint.
Leeds College of Music: Joel Purnell, Tori Freestone, Simon Kaylor.
Chethams School of Music: Iain Dixon, Jim Muirhead, Andrew Wilson.

- Do you belong to any professional organisations?

I am a member of the Musicians Union, therefore I encourage a professional approach and reasonable rates.

- Tell me about some of your current students.

Student One: A 15 year-old female saxophonist and clarinet who has recently achieved grade 8 distinction on both instruments with scores of 140/150 or above. She also successfully auditioned for the prolific Aldeburgh Young Musicians Programm which she has undertaken for the past two years.

Student Two: Now a young man of 19 years who is on the autistic spectrum he came to me for two years with a view to achieving a place at his first choice music conservatoire. He achieved this last year and heads into his second year with a first for year one.

Student Three: A man in his 60's with a passion for jazz music who started 6 months ago with a view to going on a jazz summer school in August. His background in jazz helped here and we successfully got him up to standard in time to enjoy a week in the sunshine playing in a band and jamming on stage in the evenings!
