About Zachary

I am a professional music educator with over 20 years of experience teaching piano and classical vocal. Throughout my career across Hong Kong and London, I have guided hundreds of students—from those establishing their foundational skills to advanced musicians preparing for Grade 8 and professional diplomas, with many achieved a merit or distinction.

Before moving to the UK, I founded and ran a busy private music studio in Hong Kong where I taught piano, classical singing, and music theory. I also worked extensively as a collaborative accompanist for major music festivals. This background gave me a deep understanding of what it takes to communicate music effectively and perform confidently under pressure.

I hold a BA in Musicology from the University of Hong Kong and an MA in Piano Pedagogy from Hong Kong Baptist University, alongside the LMusTCL diploma. This academic foundation allows me to combine a high standard of musical performance with a practical understanding of educational psychology and the science behind how we learn and play.

About the lesson

I specialise in guiding intermediate and advanced musicians through demanding repertoire, ABRSM/Trinity exams, and technical refinement. I also welcome serious beginners who are ready to build a strong foundation and can maintain focus throughout a full lesson.

As music becomes more complex, playing or singing with a healthy, tension-free technique is crucial. I help you develop a relaxed, sustainable approach that serves your musical expression. To support this, my teaching integrates performance alignment: as a certified yoga teacher, I understand how posture, breathing, and physical awareness directly affect our sound, allowing you to use your body effectively to release your full musical potential.

In our lessons, we will focus on:

Repertoire & Interpretation: Exploring pieces that challenge you musically and bringing out your own artistic voice.

Healthy Technique: Developing a relaxed, efficient approach to the keyboard or vocal alignment to prevent fatigue, improve agility, and unlock a better tone.

Performance Psychology: Practical preparation and mindset strategies for handling exams, recitals, or stage nerves.

Details

The complimentary 30-min first session offered through this platform is an online consultation. This allows us to meet via video call, discuss your musical background and goals, perform a basic observation of your playing or singing, and map out a structured plan for the future lessons.

To ensure we have adequate time to warm up, address technical exercises, work deeply on repertoire, and cover musicianship, my default lesson length is 60 minutes.

For younger students or those at Grade 5 and below who may not yet have the stamina or concentration to sit for a full hour, I could offer a 45-minute lesson.

For your convenience, I operate exclusively as a visiting teacher. Lessons take place in the comfort of your own home. I travel to students across West London, specifically covering Hammersmith, Chiswick, Barnes, Fulham, and Kensington. The lesson fee is all-inclusive, covering travel time and transportation.
