About Oluwa
Teaching piano allows me to help students discover the unique joy of making music, while also guiding them towards discipline, resilience, and self-confidence. My approach is comprehensive yet personalised, blending traditional instruction in reading, rhythm, technique, and form with modern strategies like improvisation, creative assignments, and student-led goal setting. I work with all ages and levels, and I love helping each student find their own connection to the music they play. Beginners focus on building a strong foundation, using movement-based rhythm exercises, ear training games, and accessible repertoire that builds confidence. Intermediate and advanced students dive deeper into tone production, expressive phrasing, harmonic analysis, and interpretation. For students interested in composing or arranging, I support those goals by introducing them to chord voicings, form structures, and melodic development. One student came to me unsure of whether music was something they could really do—within a year, they performed their first original piece at a school event and started leading their own practice schedule. I provide resources for effective practice, help students build performance confidence, and guide them in reflecting on their musical growth. Each lesson is a collaboration: we discuss goals, identify challenges, and work together to build solutions. Piano study is not only about playing notes—it’s about finding your voice, telling your story, and learning how to listen deeply. My mission is to help students fall in love with music in a way that’s sustainable, joyful, and empowering.

My teaching philosophy centres on the idea that piano should be an enjoyable and fulfilling journey tailored to each student’s unique goals and interests. I aim to create lessons that balance solid technical training with creative exploration, helping students develop a comprehensive skill set while discovering their personal musical voice. Technical fundamentals such as finger independence, rhythmic accuracy, and sight-reading are integrated with expressive techniques like dynamics, articulation, and phrasing. I also encourage students to improvise and compose as ways to deepen understanding and foster creativity. Music theory is taught in a practical context, making it relevant and accessible. I adapt lessons to the student’s preferred genres, whether classical, jazz, pop, or film music, so learning feels meaningful and motivating. Practice strategies and goal-setting keep students engaged and progressing steadily. I regularly use recording and playback to give students real-time feedback and foster self-assessment skills. One of my proudest moments was supporting a student who began lessons as a shy beginner and grew into a confident performer through consistent effort and encouragement. My approach is holistic, aiming to nurture not only technical proficiency but also musicality, confidence, and a lifelong passion for the piano.
