About Mignon

Besides the creative enjoyment I experienced while studying poetry through UNISA (University of South Africa), I am essentially a perpetual student in the world of poetry. Most of all, poetry is teaching me the simple - yet brave - joy of expression.
One of my favourite quotes by Hemingway goes, “There is nothing to writing. All you do is sit down at a typewriter and bleed.”
Poetry only really feels complicated when we are trying to tame it or force it too much. The real magic lies in letting it guide your pen... .

About the lesson

Poetry is the one area in teaching where I feel a strict methodology should never be used. Instead, I wish to inspire an evoking of one's own passion for writing in my students & let them seek out the quintessential poet abiding there within their pen.

I base a lot of my teaching & reading on Shakespeare, Whitman, Maya Angelou &, uniquely, Byron’s poem ‘Childe Harold’s Pilgrimage’, to name a few. The study course material accompanying much of these works is based on UNISA’s latest literary material. I am very happy to adapt this to whatever course work you are using, if you are seeking a tutor for exam purposes, as opposed to doing these tutorials for personal development or interest.

I also then take a dive into a brief but fascinating history of the English Language, as well as sharing a perspective on how to make Shakespearean & ‘Old’ English relatable, remarkably enjoyable &, well let’s face it, relatively comprehendible. I also do an unpacking of the 5 Elements of Poetry: the splashes of lyrical paint that we can throw onto the canvas of our poems, if we so desire. Furthermore, an overview of Writing Skills, Poetic Imagery, Structure, Style & Rhythm of Poetry, Free Verse, & a quick look at the lyrical poetry of rap.

The first assignment centers on becoming more familiar with writing free verse poetry, or any style of poetry you choose, & does not need to be handed in. The aim in this is for you to warm up those writing muscles & seek out something that you are passionate enough about to bring to life on paper.
The second assignment relates to becoming more familiar with ‘Old English’ literature, while the final assignment has to do with poetic form & rhythm.
Again, to focus on your specific needs, these assignments can be adjusted to suit your course work if you are working toward exams.
