About Reed

I am an Architecture tutor with 8 years of experience and a Master of Architecture with specific expertise in architecture education and the university application process. I have worked with over 275 students preparing architecture portfolios for undergraduate applications and have an excellent record of students gaining places at competitive architecture schools. My teaching is specifically built around the genuine requirements of architecture admissions — what tutors at top schools actually look for, what distinguishes successful from unsuccessful portfolios, and how each student's genuine interests can be presented most effectively. Let me help you develop a portfolio that gives you the best possible chance of a place at the architecture school of your choice.

My Architecture teaching is specifically oriented toward the architecture university application portfolio, an artefact that is both deeply personal and highly technical in its requirements and that most applicants significantly underprepare. I begin portfolio development work with an extended discussion about each student's genuine interests — what buildings they find compelling and why, what places have affected them strongly, what problems they want to explore through design — because the most successful architecture portfolios are built around authentic personal interests rather than what the student believes universities want to see. Design process documentation is a major component of the portfolio I help students develop, because architecture schools are interested in how students think about design as well as the final results, and the ability to show a design process with initial ideas, development sketches, critical evaluation, and refinement is highly valued. I teach architectural drawing as a communication skill with specific conventions — the difference between a sketch, a diagrammatic drawing, and a technical drawing, and when each is appropriate in a portfolio — because effective architectural portfolio presentation requires fluency in multiple representational modes. Photography of architectural and natural precedents is addressed because most successful portfolios include evidence of attentive observation of the built and natural environment, and the selection and framing of photographic evidence reveals the student's perceptual sensitivity. Interview preparation is a specific component of my teaching because architecture school interviews assess the student's ability to talk about their work, justify their design decisions, and engage with critical feedback — skills that require specific preparation and practice. My teaching goal is a portfolio and interview presentation that genuinely represents each student's design thinking and maximises their university application success.
