My name is Jamie McAllon and I am expressing my interest in the part-time Special/Inclusive Education Teacher role at Melville High School. I have been a teacher for seven and a half years and I recently returned from Maternity Leave after raising my son for the last year. My husband and I are relocating to the Kempsey Shire at the end of this year. I have 5 years of experience teaching students with a range of disabilities and complex needs - particularly with communication difficulties and histories of trauma.

My previous position was held at Mudgeeraba Special School (MSS). Here I have taught students from Prep to Year 12. Students within the school have either an Individual Curriculum Plan (ICP) or Personal Future Action Plan (PFAP) which outline their learning goals and curriculum focus. Each day, I provided specialised teaching with individualised programs that helped to facilitate access to and engagement in educational opportunities and to maximise learning outcomes.

For two years at MSS, I worked in the Senior School cohort, where I provided programs and experiences that engaged students and ensured they were prepared to transition to post-school life. I completed a Certificate IV in Training and Assessment in 2017, which provided me the skills necessary to deliver Certificate I courses to the Senior School students. As their trainer, I differentiated learning experiences so each student could access the course materials and succeed in their studies. I helped to build the Senior School business, where partnerships with the community and businesses now support MSS students to transition to the next phase of their lives. Each term, there is a business breakfast lead by the school students.

In 2020 I was offered the role of Age-Appropriate Pedagogies (AAP) Coach. In this position, I mentored teachers to apply a range of AAP approaches and characteristics of quality teaching in their learning experiences. I see the learning environment as a critical influence on a student's learning, so helping teachers to understand their students' abilities and interests was very important in increasing engagement and success. I received great feedback from my colleagues, Principal and Deputy Principal at the conclusion of my role and I'm confident and ready to support all active engagement in learning experiences and embed inclusive practices.

In my time as a teacher, I have had many experiences with students with different skillsets and complex behaviours. I understand that there is a reason that sits behind challenging behaviour and students are communicating important information about their stress, distress and level of development. At MSS I engaged in Professional Learning Committees to build the skills necessary for understanding the students in my class. All students at Mudgeeraba State Special School engage in Positive Behaviour Learning lessons. Each week, I taught literacy, health, resilience and value concepts in real life, lifelike and explicit teaching situations, through describing student's strengths and ideas on how to be a respectful, honest and caring member of the community. I lead teaching experiences where students could identify and practise emotional responses to role-plays and in real-world context. Specifically, at MSS, I used models to understand and implement a holistic approach to behaviour. Once a student was identified as requiring ongoing intervention, a Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) Plan, which brought together parents/carers, professionals and the student. In these plans, I considered the student’s current level of performance and determined short and long-term goals, support requirements and priorities.

In my role as classroom teacher, I was confident in liasing with parents, stakeholders and members of the community. Parent-teacher contact helped me to understand my students better and enabled more advantageous learning connections. I believe it is essential to the overall development of a student, that close contact between home and school be maintained and nurtured. I have been a team leader, led a Professional Learning Committee, worked in a team- teaching role and was an AAP coach. With my colleagues, I helped to start-up the MSS business, 'Ready and Able', build partnerships with other businesses and create skill development opportunities for students based on their vocational or lifestyle pathway.
