About Alex

I have taught at every level of the school system, from preschool to university.

That range is the part of my background that actually matters here. It means I know what a concept looks like the first time a child meets it, and I know exactly what it has to become by the time it turns into calculus. When a student gets stuck, I can usually trace the gap back years — and I know how it was originally taught, because I have taught it that way myself, to that age, in that classroom.

Then there are the students who came before yours. Some arrived convinced they were simply "not math people." Some were one bad exam away from dropping the subject. I have watched them come back after a session saying "oh, that's all it was?"

For completeness: I also hold a degree in electrical engineering, which is where I learned to use mathematics as a working tool rather than a subject to pass. It shows up in how I explain things — I care about why a formula works, not just that it does.

What you can expect from me is simple. I arrive prepared and on time. I tell you honestly where your student stands, including when the news is not great. I keep parents in the loop without making the student feel reported on. And I do not do judgment: a student who says "I don't understand" is being honest, not difficult, and that sentence is where the real work starts.

I teach the way I wish math had been taught to me: by removing the mystery, not by piling on formulas.

Every student arrives with a different blockage, so the first thing I do is find it. Before explaining anything, I look at what they are actually working on — a homework set, an upcoming exam, a chapter that never landed — and I test the assumption underneath. Most of the time, the problem is not the current chapter: it is a step from two years ago that was never fully secured.

A typical lesson follows a simple arc. We start with what is on their desk and identify the real gap. We rebuild the concept with concrete examples. Then we solve problems together, and I progressively step back so that they do the work while I watch. At the end, the student explains the idea back to me in their own words — if they can teach it, they own it — and leaves with a short, targeted list of exercises and a method they can reuse alone.

What sets me apart is the range and the background. As an electrical engineering graduate and a teacher, I have used mathematics as a working tool rather than just passing tests with it, and I can follow a student from basic addition and subtraction all the way to calculus without handing them off to someone else. I also tutor science, so a single session can connect the maths to the physics or chemistry it serves.

My lessons are for any student, at any level, who wants to understand rather than memorize: the one who is falling behind, the one who is doing fine but bored, and the one coming back to math after years away. Sessions are online, unless within 50km.
