Basic classes to learn the ropes about onboarding, by setting your game.
Knowing professional advances towards your opponents.
Calculating your defence mechanism to protect your Queen and King!
The following are some practical tips to learn in our practical classes:
1. Start with the Basics
Introduce the chessboard and how it is set up.
Explain how each piece moves.
Teach the value of each piece:
Pawn = 1
Knight = 3
Bishop = 3
Rook = 5
Queen = 9
King = Priceless (must never be lost)
2. Teach the Objective
Explain check, checkmate, and stalemate.
Demonstrate simple checkmate patterns, such as:
King and Queen vs. King
King and Rook vs. King
3. Emphasize Opening Principles
Rather than teaching many opening variations, teach these principles:
Control the center.
Develop knights and bishops early.
Castle early to protect the king.
Avoid moving the same piece repeatedly without a reason.
Don't bring the queen out too early.
4. Develop Tactical Awareness
Teach common tactics one at a time:
Fork
Pin
Skewer
Discovered attack
Double attack
Removing the defender
5. Teach Strategic Thinking
Help students ask these questions before every move:
What is my opponent threatening?
Is my move safe?
Can I improve my worst-placed piece?
What is my plan?
6. Use Short Practice Games
Play games with specific goals, such as:
Winning with only kings and pawns.
Practicing castling early.
Finding checkmate in one or two moves.
7. Review Every Game
After each game:
Identify good moves.
Discuss mistakes without criticism.
Show better alternatives.
8. Encourage Good Habits
Teach students to:
Think before moving.
Look for checks, captures, and threats.
Never resign too quickly.
Learn from every game.
9. Make Learning Fun
Organize mini tournaments.
Give simple puzzles.
Reward improvement, not just victories.
10. Recommend Daily Practice
Encourage:
15–30 minutes of puzzles.
One or two slow games each day.
Reviewing at least one completed game.
A good teaching sequence is:
1. Board setup and piece movement.
2. Check and checkmate.
3. Opening principles.
4. Basic tactics.
5. Endgames.
6. Strategy and planning.
7. Tournament practice.
This progression helps beginners build a strong foundation while keeping lessons engaging and enjoyable.
