About Andy

Hi, I'm YIHENG LIN, you can also call me Andy! I'm both teaching art and language now! I'm glad to share my skills and knowledge with you and enjoy the happy studying time with you! I'm bilingual, speaking both Cantonese and Chinese. I was born in China then migrated to Hong Kong when I was a kid, this is the reason why I can master both of these two languages. I tried to teach language during my BA degree on a Chinese platform, I started teaching students from different countries and with different requests. I've got lots of positive feedback from them until now. I helped more than 100 students in many aspects, if you are looking for a tutor for your exam preparation, business or just want to have fun, I can make you the whole plan and let you get what you want.

Beyond our scheduled lesson time, I'm available to address any questions or uncertainties you may have about the Chinese language. As a full-time teacher, you can schedule lessons with me every day, from Monday to Saturday, between 9:00 AM and 8:00 PM. Simply send me a request, and I'll respond within two hours. This is an exceptional opportunity to embark on an engaging journey of learning Chinese. You can choose from a variety of courses, all of which come with comprehensive materials such as PowerPoint presentations, audio resources, images, and brief quizzes: Express Beginner's Course (Level A1/HSK1): Ideal for absolute beginners who wish to learn through practical application rather than rote memorisation. This course equips you to introduce yourself, handle date and time expressions, place orders at restaurants, and navigate shopping scenarios. Conversation Lessons: Engage in daily conversations with a native speaker in this course. We'll discuss everyday topics and international news. I've curated a selection of 40 topics for beginners, 175 topics for intermediate learners, and 85 topics for advanced learners. Tailored Scholastic Course (Level A2/B1/B2/C1): Designed for high school and university students. This course helps you prepare for exams or get ready for the upcoming academic year, using the textbooks commonly used in your educational institution. Comprehensive Certification Course (HSK 2/3/4/5/6): The HSK (Hanyu Shuiping Kaoshi) test evaluates the proficiency of non-native Chinese speakers. Feel free to select the course that best aligns with your goals and interests. Together, we'll make your Chinese language learning journey both enjoyable and successful.

  • 1) Do you speak this language fluently because of your origins or because a teacher inspired you to learn?

As a native , I do speak it fluently, but in my country, people have different accents, some of them like my parents, their accents are strong, so it took me a long time to get rid of it, and make it international, but finally I made it!
  • 2) Can you name a living, historical or fictional character that you think is the emblematic representative of the language's culture?

For Mandarin Chinese, one of the emblematic representatives of its culture could be Confucius, known for his teachings on morality, ethics, and relationships. His influence on Chinese culture, philosophy, and language remains significant to this day.
  • 3) Is there a typical word, phrase, tradition or behavior in the language that you particularly like?

One of the phrases I find intriguing and deeply meaningful in Mandarin is "磨刀不误砍柴工" (mó dāo bù wù kǎn chái gōng), which means "sharpening the axe will not delay the cutting of firewood." It emphasizes the importance of preparation and readiness before undertaking a task. It speaks volumes about the value of proper planning and readiness for success.
  • 4) Why does speaking this language matter to you?

Speaking Mandarin is vital as it opens doors to a rich cultural heritage, allows for deeper connections with diverse communities, and fosters a better understanding of traditions, philosophies, and perspectives embedded within the language. It's a gateway to appreciating a beautiful tapestry of history, literature, and contemporary life.
  • 5) What is the main difficulty in learning this language and what can help the process of learning?

One of the main difficulties in learning Mandarin Chinese is mastering the tones, which can significantly alter the meaning of words. Additionally, the writing system with thousands of characters poses a challenge.

Consistent practice, immersion through conversations or media, utilizing apps or courses focusing on tones, and breaking down characters into manageable chunks can significantly aid in the learning process. Practice and exposure are key!
  • 6) Provide a valuable anecdote related to your language learning or your days at school.

One memorable moment from my language learning days involved a particularly tricky phrase I struggled to pronounce correctly in Mandarin. After many attempts, a fellow learner shared a fun mnemonic that finally helped me nail the pronunciation. It highlighted the collaborative and supportive nature of language learning, where fellow learners can offer invaluable tips and tricks to overcome challenges.
  • 7) How has travel or a specific trip helped you to increase your skill and knowledge of the language?

During a trip to China, immersing myself in the local environment allowed me to practice Mandarin in authentic situations. Conversing with locals at markets, restaurants, and while navigating public transport significantly improved my language skills. Experiencing the language in real-life settings enhanced my understanding of colloquial expressions, cultural nuances, and improved my confidence in using Mandarin.
  • 8) What makes you a Superprof in language?

I've dedicated a lot of time to studying and understanding languages, which has given me a good grasp of how they work. I enjoy helping others by sharing what I've learned and giving tips to make learning languages a bit easier. It's rewarding to see people progress in their language skills!
