About Cullyn
I lead students to discover and engage with music through creative projects, collaboration, and performance. I teach music theory, composition/songwriting, Sound and Film, Exploring Genre, and direct MULTI–a new multidisciplinary ensemble where students of any creative practice will create and perform new pieces and installations to be presented as an ensemble.
My compositional work revisits my rock band roots in communal music-making by creating music that interacts with different varieties of performer input through unconventional notation and co-composition. My music has been described as “theatrical,” “riveting and inventive,” and “push[ing] the idea of what music and musical organization is.” (Composer’s Toolbox)
I perform live video processing and electronics with avant-garde country band Horace Whisper & the Empty Hand as well as theatrically driven experimental music with AmiEnsemble. Recently my work has focused on creating extramusical objects to accompany his compositions such as a retro video game program note, AI-produced radio broadcast, Instagram Augmented Reality Filter, and performer-created postcards. My piece “everywhere all ways” written for Unheard-of//Ensemble won the Dead Elf Award and the 2022 CreArtBox Call for Scores.

My lessons are focused on what YOU want to accomplish in music. As an educator with a lot of experience in teaching, performing, and writing music at all different levels (K-12 certified and six years of teaching at the collegiate level).
Here are a few typical skills I have taught and how I approach guiding you in your learning while always keeping your interests at the forefront:
Composing/songwriting/arranging:
-I help you establish accomplishable goals such as creating a composition or making music for an EP.
-I help you work through skills that are most applicable to what you want to accomplish in your creative work such as developing harmony, writing lyrics, or learning how to write for specific instruments.
-We develop weekly actionable goals based on what was accomplished during your lesson that work toward your larger goals.
Theory:
-I help you work toward goals such as preparing for studying music in college, help with AP Music Theory, or general interest.
-I work with you on written theory, aural skills, and creative applications of theory skills to fit your interests. I pull from a wide catalog of music from classical, rap, country, rock, jazz, and everything in between to ensure that what you're learning applies to all music, especially the music that most excites you.
-We develop weekly actionable goals that extend your learning from the lesson and help you continue to grow in your understanding of music throughout the week.

Perfect! Explains things concisely, and is willing to meet you where youre at! He really cares about what you want to get out of a lesson and is effective at planning what needs to be done to achieve that.
- Andrew is a super diligent student! Really dedicated to applying what was learned in the lesson and open to trying new things. Clearly a self-starter and easily motivated. I have no doubt that Andrew will improve greatly at any task he sets his mind to.See the response Cullyn :
