Teacher Charles began his musical journey from 7 learning the piano. He joined the concert band in Hwa Chong and in NUS as a flautist, and prepared for his diploma in piano performance while he concurrently pursued his degree in psychology. Right after graduation, he decided to follow his heart and jumped into the world of piano teaching! Aside from teaching private piano lessons, he has also taught in Cristofori Music School and is currently also in Medley Music School (TPYsafra).

As a teacher, he believes in acting as a mentor to bring the best out of his students, and the greatest reward is building passion and commitment in his students, and seeing them eager to come to his studio each lesson! His students range from beginners ages 5-6, up till adults, with some learning music seriously and others purely for leisure.

Teacher Charles is patient and encouraging: he strongly believes the musical journey is less about talent, but largely a test of character, determination and effort. Parental involvement is strongly encouraged in the learning process, and teacher Charles is very happy to update parents with their children’s current learning progress, as well as provide suggestions for how parents can help when they oversee the child’s practice at home.

Finally, teacher Charles is constantly seeking to outdo himself, achieving 4th place in the Batam International Piano Competition in 2017 and performing for events like the Cristofori Music School's annual company event in 2018 and Medley Music School's annual concert in 2024. He is also actively taking lessons to further himself and pursue the higher diplomas.

About the lesson

Hi, I have around 9 years of teaching experience both privately and in various music schools, and I am currently also teaching in Medley Music School at TPYsafra.

Lessons are playing and enjoying music, but I like to ensure the kids have a good foundation and all relevant theory will be taught alongside. I like to start the child’s musical journey with lots of singing and learning to read in DoReMi (Solfege), as years of experience showed me that this leads to better learning and appreciation of music in the longer run, despite this being the more demanding route that many teachers avoid. I use a mix of method books, and typically adopt the Piano Adventures series for the younger kids. We eventually approach the ABRSM grading exams, while learning other pieces alongside for a more fun and balanced curriculum!

As for lesson durations, I believe in giving 1h lessons for all grades if possible, since there's always enough activities to rotate around to keep their interest and attention, but for kids that are 7 or under (before getting used to primary school and classroom setting), I do 45 mins lessons and adjust the fees down slightly!

I am very happy to give a free trial lesson with no strings attached, so we can see if I am a good fit for you and your child, however trial lessons will be at my convenience, and in most cases I seek your kind understanding to come to my studio at AMK for them.
