About Olalekan

Hello, I'm Dr. Olalekan Balogun - an Assistant Professor and Acting Departmental Co-Chair in Geography and Environment at Trinity Western University, and someone who truly loves helping students succeed.

MY ACADEMIC JOURNEY
I earned my BSc in Geography at the University of Ibadan, then my MSc and PhD at York University in Toronto, where I held a York Doctoral Fellowship and passed my PhD comprehensive exam with distinction. I went on to postdoctoral research in Physics at the University of Toronto, modeling wildfire emissions with satellite data. I also completed a federal research contract with Environment and Climate Change Canada.

RESEARCH AND PUBLICATIONS
I am the lead author of peer-reviewed papers on northern peatlands and climate change in the Journal of Geophysical Research: Biogeosciences (2024), Science of the Total Environment (2023) and Polar Science (2022), and a co-author in the Journal of Hydrology (2020). I have presented at the American Geophysical Union, ArcticNet and the Canadian Meteorological and Oceanographic Society, and I serve as a peer reviewer for Remote Sensing of Environment. I know first-hand what it takes to plan a project, analyze messy data, write it up, survive peer review and defend it - and I'm happy to share every lesson I learned along the way.

TEACHING AND MENTORING
I have taught and supported university students for more than ten years - as a teaching assistant, lab and field coordinator, course instructor and now professor - in courses from Physical Geography and Hydrosphere to Global Climate Change and Climatology of High Latitudes. I have mentored and supervised teaching assistants, trained undergraduates in research and statistical methods, and as an educational developer I trained over 100 university faculty and TAs in effective teaching.

WHAT STUDENTS CAN EXPECT
I'm approachable, patient and genuinely kind. I value empathetic listening, open communication, a little humor, and a respectful, safe space where no question is too small. As founder of the Prince Casper Foundation, which supports education in underserved communities, I care deeply about opening doors for every student - whatever your background or starting point.

University can feel overwhelming - especially when you are facing your first research project, an honours thesis, a master's proposal or a difficult course on your own. My sessions are a calm, encouraging space where you get clear guidance from someone who has walked the whole path, from undergraduate to PhD, postdoc and professor.

HOW I CAN HELP
Academic mentorship and tutoring
- Understanding difficult course material, especially in geography, environmental science, earth systems, climate and the physical sciences
- Study strategies, time management and planning for exams and assignments
- Building confidence, motivation and a healthy relationship with your studies
- Graduate school planning: choosing a program and supervisor, applications, statements of intent and scholarships

Research mentorship and supervision
- Finding a research question and turning an idea into a workable project
- Literature reviews, research proposals and study design
- Data analysis with R, Python, Excel and GIS, plus statistics and interpreting results
- Scientific writing: structuring a thesis, chapter or journal manuscript, and responding to reviewer comments
- Preparing conference posters, presentations and thesis defences
- Ongoing check-ins to keep your thesis or capstone project on track

A TYPICAL SESSION
1. We start with where you are: your goals, deadlines and what is worrying you
2. We work through the problem together - a concept, a chapter draft, a dataset or a plan
3. You leave with clear, written next steps and constructive feedback
4. Between sessions I can review drafts so each meeting moves you forward

Undergraduate students (including honours and capstone projects), master's and PhD students, and early-career researchers. Ideal if you are in geography, environmental science, climate or earth sciences, or any field that uses quantitative data analysis.
