About Ellen

I am a professional teacher who loves seeing my students have the 'a-ha!' moment when they finally understand, or can do, something that they struggled with before. I hope that one of the reasons my students thrive under my instruction is that I am honest with them about their areas of strength and what they need to work on and I commit to celebrating their efforts as well as their achievements. I am new to Superprof, but am an experienced online tutor. I am passionate about the power of literacy and literature and aim to make ambitious English accessible to students who have not always felt like successful readers or scholars of English in the past.

About the lesson

Online lessons are tailored to individual students, based on parents' requests and an initial diagnostic session (not scary!) to determine the student's areas of strength, areas for improvement, and aspects of the student as an individual and what would work best for them.

A typical 1 hour Year 9-11 GCSE preparation lesson may look like:
Reading warm up
Writing warm up
Review of relevant knowledge
Main reading/writing task with support
Joint review of success/challenges in task and agree area of focus for next session

A typical 30 min Year 6-8 reading skills/literacy session may look like:
Vocabulary game
Short reading task with support
Short independent reading challenge
Celebrate successes and recognise challenges, set a goal for the week

This first lesson offered with Ellen will allow you to get to know each other and clearly specify your needs for your next lessons.

Details

The initial free session is not a typical lesson, but a getting-to-know-you and diagnostic session to determine:
The student's areas of strength and where they need more support
What kind of session structure might work best for the individual student
If I am the right tutor for the student and their family.

Although sessions are online, I do require students to physically write on paper for some tasks, so they will need an exercise book or folder with paper for their tuition sessions.

Depending on what is discussed with the family and taking into account financial means, etc., I may recommend physical copies of reading material for the family to buy - this is to enhance learning, but if this is not possible for you, it is certainly not a must.
