About Ryan
I am a qualified UK teacher, former Head of Maths, school leader, exam marker and specialist tutor, and the founder of Ryan Varco Tuition, with more than 12 years’ experience in education.
During my career, I have worked as Head of Maths, Head of English and Head of Key Stage, alongside roles as a curriculum developer and teacher coach. I have led curriculum development, trained teachers and supported school improvement, giving me a deep understanding of how mathematical understanding develops and how to help students make sustained academic progress.
I provide personalised online Maths tuition to UK and international students, supporting children who need to close specific gaps as well as confident mathematicians who need greater stretch and challenge.
My approach goes beyond helping students complete a worksheet or memorise a method. I identify the underlying reason a child is struggling, address misconceptions systematically and create a clear learning pathway around their individual needs.
Maths is also a major part of my work preparing students for competitive school entrance examinations. Students I have supported have secured offers from schools including Eton College, Westminster School, Winchester College, St Paul’s School, King’s College School Wimbledon, North London Collegiate School, Wycombe Abbey, Brighton College, Sevenoaks School and City of London School.
I want students to become accurate, resilient and independent mathematicians who understand why methods work and have the confidence to tackle unfamiliar problems.

Every student has different mathematical strengths and gaps, so my one-hour online lessons are individually tailored to their current attainment, goals and areas for development.
I provide specialist support in:

• Maths entrance-exam preparation
Your Maths service specifically covers arithmetic, reasoning, problem solving, algebra, geometry and more advanced mathematical concepts, alongside the development of accuracy, resilience and independent mathematical thinking.
I begin by identifying the skills a student has already mastered and the misconceptions or curriculum gaps that are limiting their progress. I then build lessons around these priorities rather than simply following a generic scheme.
For arithmetic and fluency, I help students develop efficient methods and improve accuracy rather than relying on guesswork or unnecessarily lengthy strategies.
For reasoning and problem solving, students learn how to interpret questions, identify the mathematics required, explain their thinking and apply familiar knowledge in unfamiliar situations.
My teaching is calm, structured and carefully scaffolded. Difficult concepts are broken into manageable steps before support is gradually reduced as the student becomes more confident and independent. This reflects the assessment-led and scaffolded approach at the heart of my wider teaching.
Where appropriate, I also provide stretch and challenge, including higher-level reasoning and preparation for mathematical competitions for students ready to work beyond their current curriculum. Your brochure specifically includes competition preparation and higher-level problem solving within the Maths service.
My Maths teaching has also contributed to successful school applications, including offers from Hampton School, Dulwich College, Royal Grammar School Guildford, Whitgift School, Latymer Upper School, Highgate School, Alleyn’s School, Guildford High School, Lady Eleanor Holles School and Reigate Grammar School.
Most importantly, I want students to understand how to think mathematically, not simply copy a method and forget it afterwards.
