About Lauren

Lauren Jackson is a dedicated scientist and musician, who has pursued dual degrees in Biology (Chemistry minor) and Piano Performance at Missouri State University. With a passion for interdisciplinary research, Lauren has been fortunate to have an undergraduate research position at the Center for Biomedical Sciences, where she has investigated pain and inflammation pathways under the direction of Dr. Paul Durham. Her academic interests extend to neuroscience and music cognition, exploring how music influences brain function and learning. An accomplished performer, Lauren has appeared at Carnegie Hall, the Guild of Carillonneurs in North America Congress at Concord University (2024), the North Central Regional Carillon Guild (2024), and international venues in Italy and France. Lauren is most recently the 1st prize winner of the NFMC McClure Piano competition. She is an Associate Carillonneur, as well as an active violinist in chamber and orchestral settings. As an educator, she has maintained a private piano and violin studio for nearly a decade and has held leadership roles in Phi Kappa Phi and MTNA. Lauren will continue her post-graduate studies at the Royal Carillon School in Mechelen, Belgium, where she will explore the intersection of American carillon music, traditional Flemish carillon music, and the potential therapeutic capabilities of carillon in the realm of neuroscience.

I have a host of scientifically educational experiences. Under the direction of Dr. Paul Durham, I worked as an undergraduate researcher in the Jordan Valley Innovation Center. The focus of our research is understanding inflammation and pain pathways relating to temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorder. In this position, I performed tasks related to computer data analysis of neuron images. Additionally, I have utilized lab techniques such as immunoblotting, antibody staining, and SDS-PAGE. Biological Techniques: Experience with the amplification of DNA through Polymerase Chain Reaction sequencing in both classroom and research settings. Gel electrophoresis, cell culturing, bacterial culturing, immunoblotting, and antibody staining familiarity. Experience in rat handling and general vivarium techniques. Chromatography experience in microscale organic chemistry lab class. Microscopy Techniques: Light microscopy experience with cellular and tissue analysis. Fluorescence microscopy experience with visualization of fluorescently labeled specimens. Bioinformatics: Comprehensive technical experience with ImageJ and Zen for tissue analysis in research settings. Statistical experience with R Studio for data set analysis. I am able to tutor students in a wide range of content areas, as well as provide feedback and advice on scientific papers, poster projects, and more.
