About Greg

As a retired teacher and part-time tutor, I really love to help kids and adults learn that math can be doable and sometimes fun. You will find me very personable and eager to see my students gain confidence in anything that involves math.

As a mathematics instructor for adult basic education, I have extensive experience teaching and tutoring students who had learning challenges and needed the one-on-one attention and patience of an instructor who understands that learning does not occur in a vacuum where life's challenges are put on hold.

When I was teaching in British Columbia to adult office staff, I had a few students who were challenged and recognized that cultural differences shape the students' learning patterns. I thus had to be creative in how the learning concepts were conveyed to my students while being patient and understanding that sometimes traditional teaching tools had to be adapted to the students' strengths and weaknesses.

About the lesson

As a retired teacher and part-time tutor, I really love to help kids and adults learn that math can be doable and sometimes fun. You will find me very personable and eager to see my students gain confidence in anything that involves math.

My approach to tutoring is to get familiar with the student's strengths and areas that need attention and to tailor my lessons to the student's learning style. Some students are very visual so I use many diagrams and others do better with verbal explanations. Concepts are explained step-by-step and nothing is skipped until both the student and I are confident that some tips and methods can be used to speed up the problem solving. I like to simplify and cut out the technical jargon so that common sense prevails.

During my career as math teacher, engineer and economic development analyst, my fondest memories were teaching grade 10 and 11 algebra and trigonometry to students who were coming back to upgrade their high school math. Most were able to overcome their fear of math and actually embrace analytical reasoning.
