About Nick

I am a professional saxophonist and recent graduate of the Royal Northern College of Music (RNCM), where I specialised in music performance across classical, jazz, and pop styles. Having trained at one of the UK’s leading conservatoires, I have developed both a high level of technical ability and a versatile musical approach that I now bring into my teaching.

Alongside my performance career, I have several years of experience teaching private students of all ages and abilities, from complete beginners to advanced players. I am passionate about helping students build confidence, improve their technique, and most importantly, enjoy the process of making music.

As both a performer and educator, I understand the challenges that come with learning an instrument and aim to create lessons that are supportive, motivating, and tailored to each individual. Whether your goal is to play for fun, prepare for exams, develop improvisation skills, or work towards auditions and performances, I am committed to helping you reach your full potential.

My teaching philosophy is centred around creating a supportive, engaging, and personalised learning environment where every student can develop confidence, technique, become a great versatile musician and establish a genuine connection and enjoyment of music. I believe that no two students learn in the same way, so I tailor each lesson to suit individual goals, learning styles, and musical interests — whether that’s classical, jazz, pop, improvisation, or preparing for exams and auditions.

My teaching methodology combines strong technical foundations with creativity and musical expression. Lessons typically focus on areas such as tone production, breathing technique, voicing, articulation, scales, sight-reading, repertoire, stylistic understanding and many other aspects of music making. I also place importance on listening skills, improvisation (where relevant), and building performance confidence. My aim is not only to help students improve technically but also to encourage them to become well-rounded, independent musicians.

A typical lesson lasts 60 minutes, although shorter sessions can be arranged if preferred. Each lesson is structured but flexible, usually including a warm-up, technical exercises/studies, focused repertoire work, and goal-setting for independent practice between lessons.

I am a recent graduate of the Royal Northern College of Music (RNCM), where I specialised in music performance, with experience across classical, jazz, and pop saxophone performing as a soloist and part of many big ensembles and chamber groups. Alongside my studies and professional performing work, I have taught private students of varying ages and abilities for several years, helping them develop from complete beginners to more advanced players and even up to conservatoire level for those that choose.

My lessons are open to all ages and abilities — from complete beginners picking up the saxophone for the first time, to intermediate and advanced players looking to refine technique, musicianship, expand repertoire, improve improvisation, or prepare for graded exams, performances, and conservatoire auditions.
