About Andy

Hi, my name is Andy Klein. Over the last 15 years, I've taught private music lessons to students of all ages (from 4 to 84) and ability levels in my local community. Guitar is my area of expertise, but I teach and specialize in a wide variety of instruments and subject areas: acoustic/electric guitar, ukulele, bass, banjo, keyboards, harmonica, music theory, and songwriting. My passion is finding creative ways to help my students soar on their journey towards their musical dreams--I'd love to help you or one of your loved ones next!

My main goal as a teacher is to develop lessons that form a crossroads between a student's learning style and their specific musical interests. I customize each lesson to guide a student towards their immediate and long term goals, whether that be learning basic techniques, learning a favorite song, or simply learning ways to creatively express themselves through music. If the student isn't sure what they want to accomplish specifically, that's perfectly OK too! I'm here to help.

  • When did you first develop a passion for music and your favorite instrument?

As a toddler I was constantly singing and turning pots and pans into mini drum sets. This led to hours of messing around on the piano while holding down the sustain pedal. Though I participated in school choirs and bands, my true passion didn't take hold until I started playing both harmonica and guitar in high school, and I haven't looked back or stopped since.
  • Is there a particular type of music or artist that you listen to on a loop without it driving you crazy?

As a teacher of a variety of students, I pride myself on genuinely loving and appreciating all styles of music. As a child of the 1990s, music from that era never gets stale to me.
  • Explain to us the most difficult or riveting course you could personally give to a student of music.

I aim to mesh with each student academically and energetically to find the path that will help them most efficiently and enthusiastically reach their personal goals. The difficulty, thoroughness, and riveting nature of lessons is only limited by a student's time to dedicate to music.
  • What do you think is the most complicated instrument to master and why?

For me, the piano is the most complicated to master because it is so simple to operate. Whether you are a concert pianist or a 4-year old novice, pressing a key makes the same sound. This allows for so much freedom that the possibilities are truly infinite.
  • What are your keys to success?

My keys to success are persistence, practice, curiosity, setting/achieving reachable goals, and never forgetting to have fun.
  • Name three musicians you dream of meeting in your favourite bar in the early hours of the morning. Explain why.

I'd love to meet Stevie Wonder, Bill Withers, and Joni Mitchell in this setting because they seem like genuinely fascinating and inspiring people to be around, and I have a feeling we'd all get along well. Each absolutely exudes music, and I'd be sitting down with three of my heroes.
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to music or your days at music school.

In Elementary school, Mrs. Wagner's 2nd grade class would prepare and perform a harmonica concert each year. While I didn't end up in Mrs. Wagner's class, my sister, and three cousins all did, and I attended each show growing more and more miffed that I had never been given the opportunity. Years later while visiting my Aunt's house, I saw one of my cousin's old harmonicas in a dusty box, and asked if I could try it. My Aunt told me to take it, and I started bringing it to my high school hallways where we would create chaotic "hallway hoe-downs" and while the teachers were not exactly thrilled with the noise, before long I was playing better, absolutely hooked, and playing shows at school events in a band. From there the instruments multiplied, my love of music blossomed, and I haven't looked back since.
  • What are the little touches that make you a Superprof in music?

I meet each student where they are on that exact day in the particular moment of their lesson. Whether we are establishing new goals, celebrating successes, lamenting over missed practice time, or talking about something completely unrelated to music, I'm there to make each student feel heard and seen. Adding music into an already busy life can be an intimidating and impossible seeming task, but it's my job to guide you along the path--a path that is beyond worth it.
