About Kristiyan
I’m a competitive chess player and tutor who believes chess is one of the best tools for learning how to think. I’ve been playing in US Chess Federation tournaments since middle school, and act as captain of my award-winning school chess team. I have spent years coaching students of different ages and skill levels, from complete beginners to competitive scholastic players.
Outside of chess, I’m a computer science student who values problem-solving, strategy, and creative thinking, which are all skills that translate directly to the way I teach. I approach tutoring with patience and adaptability, meeting students where they are and helping them grow at a pace that feels both challenging and encouraging.

My approach to chess tutoring centers on teaching how to think, not how to memorize. I emphasize the development of strong fundamentals in my students: board awareness, calculation, pattern recognition, and planning. I encourage students to actively reason through positions, ask questions, and explain their ideas, helping them build confidence and independence on the board.
My teaching methods involve a combination of guided problem-solving, analysis of actual games, and interactive activities and discussions. I often work with a student’s games, pointing out patterns or errors, and then practicing exercises to eliminate those weak spots. I also include visualization exercises and decision-making scenarios to help students improve their concentration and foresight.
This process typically involves a brief warm-up period consisting of tactics or puzzles, followed by an explanation of a specific concept such as piece activity, pawn structure, or endgame basics. Finally, we will apply what we've learned to a specific example or practice game, followed by a review and possible homework to help us continue to improve.
Lessons will be geared towards beginner to intermediate level players of all ages who wish to learn a new skill or continue to improve their game for tournament or scholastic competition. Regardless of skill level or goals, whether you're looking to learn the basics or become a competitive player, my aim is to make chess not only accessible, but also fun and engaging.
