About Portia
I've been teaching people of all levels of experience for 15 years, and seeing voices and confidence blossom brings me great joy! Since 2010 I've been teaching from my music studio at home, in Falmouth University and in nature. My teaching has developed to incorporate aspects of vocal physiology - which helps us make sense of what we feel when we sing; yoga - which helps us to really allow the voice to move through the whole body; creative listening practices - which help us to really connect with our own natural expression; and therapeutic voice work - which can mean lots of things, and helps us to heal and be healthy with the help of our singing voices. I studied for my degree in music performance at Dartington College of Arts and completed my Masters at Goldsmiths College. I have studied with Meredith Monk and Maggie Nicols. I studied physiology of voice from the perspective of the Estill technique, Janice Chapman, and Gillyanne Kayes. I also hold a 200h Yoga Alliance-certified yoga teacher training certificate. I absolutely love accompanying people as they journey from the stage of "i-can't-sing-for-toffee" to a place of calm, secure pleasure in their own singing. I also absolutely love working with those who already sing but who wish to reflect on their singing practice creatively and technically. As well as writing and performing my own songs, I also run singing circles, vocal workshops and a vocal ecology course. I am a visiting voice lecturer for 2nd-year degree students at Falmouth University in Cornwall, where we explore words, sounds and meaning, and performing voice with electronics. I also privately mentor undergraduate music and art students from Goldsmiths and Chelsea Art Colleges on their final shows. In solo performance I often sing with loop station, pedals, contact mic mbira, child's harp, Korg analogue modular synths, and oyster shells. I've been found performing in venues such as The Vortex, Cafe Oto, The ICA, Iklectik, National Portrait Gallery, Purcell Room, Resonance FM, Whitstable Biennale, Sadler’s Wells, Laban, The Place... as well as abroad in Norway, Lithuania, France, Canada, Iceland, Berlin. Everyone’s voice is unique, and so is everyone’s learning approach. Yet there is a universality to what makes our voices healthy and expressive – relaxed, instinctive breathwork and whole-body connection. It is from this place of calm, active presence that natural vocal expression can flourish. As an experienced teacher and vocalist (and trained yoga teacher), I bring a holistic approach to voice teaching. We almost always begin with breathing exercises, moving naturally into simple stretches and vocal warm-ups. We use vocal exercises to explore many aspects of singing, from resonance and richness of tone, to relaxing and opening a tight throat, releasing the breath to support the singing voice with proper diaphragmatic support, melodic practices for tuning and intonation, sustained note and improv exercises to deepen our stamina, focus and capacity to listen deeply and creatively. Lessons flow at a pace suited to you, and are very much tailored to your personal level. Whether you're starting from scratch and building up the confidence to sing at all, or diving in deep to work straight away on upcoming performances, the combination of active and reflective elements will provide a meaningful, expressive, embodied singing session week-on-week. I am passionate about providing an environment that is safe enough to support curiosity and experimentation, and to strike the balance between freeflow and formal focus, thereby creating the right conditions for creative and personal growth. Perfect! Portia was a very fun and relaxing person to be taught by. I felt quite nervous as this was my first proper lesson but she made me feel at ease from the very first minutes. I had told her I wanted to extend my range so we tried a couple of exercises that were quite efficient, which happily surprised me. She also asked me to sing one of my own songs, which I absolutely hadn't prepared for. But it was a very positive experience as she helped me sing more expressively. Overall, I would say that Portia is a very professional and caring teacher and I would highly recommend her.
Perfect! Portia has been an excellent teacher. Her instructions are easy to understand and I have found her guidance highly effective.
Perfect! Professional, Intelligent, experienced and I really enjoyed the lesson. Felt an improvement right after the first one. Highly recommended
Perfect! Is warm and makes you feel comfortable
Perfect! Omg I loved it,she taught me so many things about singing and the science behind it that I didn't know about. I really enjoyed my lesson and felt like I improved right away. Can't wait to go back.
Perfect! Entertaining, informative. Portia was very patient, engaging and encouraging. She was able to explain abstract concepts simply and easily. Very down to earth, welcoming and supportive - great for shy or nervous people. I only wish I had kept better notes to make sure I remember everything we went through.
Perfect! The session with Portia was super helpful and has served in opening a whole new exploration with my voice in unexpected and creative ways... I'll definately be booking with her again...

As a musician I have had the good fortune to know and work with Portia over a number of years and can say she is a fine musician with, a very important quality this, excellent listening skills. She also has a wide background of vocal experiences and styles to draw upon which makes her able to understand the particular needs of individual pupils, tailoring lessons to achieve the best results in any circumstance. Her sense of humour and empathy is also a desirable quality in any teacher and I have no hesitation in recommending her as an excellent teacher.
Portia is great to work with, really calm when I was nervous. Highly recommend!
I have known and worked with Portia for many years. She is a consummate performer and innovative vocalist and musician who is always exploring new sounds and ways of working. Her thoughtful and super friendly approach to singing can only be beneficial to any student that comes her way.
Portia is a very patient and encouraging teacher who creates a safe and welcoming environment, where one feels comfortable and empowered to sing. She has an excellent knowledge of a variety of vocal styles and techniques, and tailors her lessons around your particular needs and interests. Her explanations are great and she has really boosted my confidence and singing abilities.
Singing with Portia during my months in London was a great way to explore my singing voice further, and discover new ways to make use of it. I am not experienced with singing techniques and have made good use of the variations and alterations I was taught. Entering her calm and atmospheric sphere was also a much appreciated contrast to the constant stimuli of sounds outside and in halls.
I had been a singer for 20 years when I decided to have some sessions with Portia to improve on my technique. 6 months later I had improved my tone, built up a great repertoire and gained about 2 semitones in my upper range. She was able to hear what my throat was doing right (and wrong) and put together exercises accordingly, as well as choosing some great songs to work on.
I felt instantly comfortable singing with Portia, she's very encouraging yet gives constructive criticism. She's helped me understand how the larynx works, and to realise my ability. She's highly qualified, professional, but extremely personable. As well as improving my singing, having lessons has increased my confidence and the whole experience is very relaxing and fulfilling. I would thoroughly recommend Portia as she's a great teacher and a bubbly, smart and unique person. Being with her is a lot of fun!
