About Sylvie

My approach to teaching saxophone is built on the conviction that every student deserves a personalized learning experience that honors their unique musical journey. I focus first on establishing the technical groundwork needed for confident and expressive playing—breath control, embouchure strength, finger dexterity, and tone development are cornerstones. I incorporate exercises that develop clean articulation, rhythmic accuracy, and healthy playing habits. Simultaneously, I encourage students to engage emotionally with their music through dynamics, vibrato, phrasing, and interpretation. Music theory and ear training are introduced as practical tools that enhance reading, improvisation, and composition skills. Improvisation is integral, approached through incremental challenges and creative games that build fluency and imagination. Repertoire is diverse and tailored to student preferences, including jazz standards, blues, classical works, and popular music arrangements, ensuring lessons are both challenging and motivating. I emphasize structured practice plans and goal-setting to maintain momentum and celebrate progress. Technology supplements lessons by enabling students to record themselves, play along with backing tracks, and analyze their performances in detail. One memorable student experience was helping a shy beginner gain confidence by preparing for and performing at their first recital, transforming their relationship with music and self-expression. I cultivate a nurturing and dynamic lesson environment where students feel supported to explore, take risks, and develop their own voice. Ultimately, I strive to guide students not only toward technical mastery but also toward a rich and rewarding lifelong musical journey.

About the lesson

As a saxophone teacher, I am dedicated to helping students achieve a balance of technical precision, musical expression, and creative confidence. I start with building a solid technical foundation—working on tone, breath control, articulation, and finger technique—so students can play comfortably and healthily for years to come.

I encourage students to discover their own sound and style through improvisation exercises, transcriptions, and listening to iconic saxophonists across a variety of genres. Music theory and ear training are integrated as practical tools that deepen students’ understanding of the music they perform and improvise. I emphasize phrasing, dynamics, and articulation to cultivate expressive playing that tells a story and connects with audiences. Technology plays a key role in my lessons, with students using recordings and apps to practice efficiently and gain perspective on their progress. I also prioritize performance preparation, teaching students how to manage stage presence and performance anxiety.

My lessons are customized to the interests and aspirations of each student, whether they want to excel in jazz ensembles, classical groups, or solo performances. I create a warm, encouraging environment where students feel safe to experiment and grow. A highlight of my teaching career was mentoring a student who transformed from a shy beginner into a confident soloist performing at local venues.
